SNOW WHITE Star Rachel Zegler Opens Up On Working With Marc Webb To Turn Disney Princess Into A "Leader"

Much has been said about Disney's plans for its Snow White remake, and lead star Rachel Zegler has now broken her silence on what she's hoping to bring to a version of the character who is a "leader."

Snow White appears to have faced more scrutiny than any other Disney live-action remake, no doubt in part because it's seemingly making a series of sweeping changes to Walt Disney's beloved 1937 animated classic.

The first was casting Latina actress and Shazam! Fury of the Gods star Rachel Zegler as the title character (leading to a great deal of racist backlash on social media). However, even more problematic for many Disney fans was the decision to ditch the Seven Dwarfs in preference for a group of "politically correct" Bandits.

The studio appears to have taken the negative response on board, adding cartoon-accurate versions of the group to the movie after delaying it by a year, presumably to allow time for extensive reshoots. Of course, doing little to help matters are resurfaced comments from Zegler in which she suggested the original story was outdated and dubbed Prince Florian a "stalker."

Doing the rounds to promote The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, Zegler seems to have avoided being asked too much about what's been happening behind the scenes. She did, however, share new insights into her approach to the character while speaking with Collider (via Toonado.com).

"Something that kind of emerged was this leader within her that I was so happy that the writers wanted her to be, and the fact that it's born out of her upbringing, but she finds it within herself throughout the course of the film and throughout the people that love her in the film and show their love for her. Marc Webb and I kind of called it her third eye opening."

"There's a couple of scenes in there where she's speaking like someone who's been alive for much longer than she has, and that's something that I relate to, something that I've been told all my life. So, getting to bring that to a character that I love so deeply and that I've spent so much time with now, it's a really amazing thing as an actor and as a performer, and I can't wait for people to get to see it."

Snow White featuring a more proactive version of the title character may be a departure from the original movie, but it may also be the right move. Remember, the closest the original version gets to being a leader is by becoming the head of the Seven Dwarfs' household when she cooks and cleans for them.

This also wouldn't be the first time we've seen something along these lines as Universal's Snow White and the Huntsman movies also gave the Princess a little more to do, turning the character into a full-blown warrior. It's going to be interesting to see how this one comes together, anyway, and whether all the backlash and negative headlines prove to be justified down the line.

Marc Webb (The Amazing Spider-Man) directs Snow White from a  screenplay by Barbie director Greta Gerwig and playwright Erin Cressida Wilson.

In terms of cast, the movie stars Rachel Zegler as Snow White, Gal Gadot as the Evil Queen, Ansu Kabia as the Huntsman, Martin Klebba as Grumpy, and Andrew Burnap as Jonathan.

Snow White is now set to be released in theaters on March 21, 2025.

@KaptainKhaos @RolandD - Rachel Zegler really is just another Brie Larson. The very thought scares many. Quite enjoyable indeed

@KaptainKhaos - Not gonna ever say someone hasn't said dumb stuff when they have, just never sure why some get WAY more ranting so often about it.

You have actors like Ruffalo posting constant HEAVILY and I'd say divisively political stuff non stop and Mackie feeding trolls every day it seems on twitter and don't think I've seen any ranting over them and can think of lots and lots of other that oft post stuff I've read that I expect folk to be on her venting about to find nothing when I bob in to look.

Yet in some cases with some others there still raging about something they said 5yrs or more ago that when not taken out of context wasn't a big deal.

Folk need to learn when to move on and if someone bothers them that much just avoid articles related to them.

just talking about an aspect of the film that is, no putting down of past material

@RolandD - yes, any excuse to claim sexism. Even though he's referring to the stupid things she said and not the fact a woman is saying them.

My sister is an Uber feminist, and even she agrees Rachel should shut up.

hopefully they don't over compensate, trying to make her a bad ass.

Let her have flaws, let her grow and learn. give her a character arc. also nothing wrong with traditionally feminine moments.

Great example of a character both bad ass, while also very much taking the caregiver role within a group

The OG Mulan that had to struggle and work is remembered a lot more than the mulan that was a bad ass fighter right from the start

Disney has a chance to replace her, but they're going to be stupid and think they can overcome her incredibly unlikability and the fact that she is BOX OFFICE POISON.

Plus, besides Snow White literally supposed to have skin as white as snow, she is supposed to be the fairest in all the land, and this woman looks like a troglodyte. She's fugly.

@HistoryofMatt - apparently fairest is being changed to "most just".

Which, in the context of the original, means the queen is going to go on a genocidal rampage because of course everyone is gonna be more just than her.

Snow White And The Seven Dwarfs is one of my favourite animated movies,Rachel Zegler needs to keep her mouth shut or she'll never work again.

Shazam 2 flop
The Hunger Games Prequel flop
Snow White (will flop)
dracula
dracula - 11/20/2023, 9:31 PM
@marvel72 - Hunger Games might not be a flop. Im not interested but it has only a 100 million dollar budget and has already made that (still needs to double to break even though). Depending on the second weekend drop could see a decent profit.

Although doubt it will be making original trilogy money
marvel72
marvel72 - 11/20/2023, 9:45 PM
@dracula - If it has a 50%+ drop it'll be a failure, promoting this must have been another $100.

NinnesMBC - 11/21/2023, 12:16 AM
@BlackSpider - They got a waiver 2 weeks or so before the strikes ended to start allowing the cast to promote it and thus these are the results. Enough time to rise the hype. Compared it to how The Marvels only started doing it the day after the strikes ended is why it failed.

The last good Disney live-action remake was The Jungle Book. Every one after that has felt like a soulless corporate cash grab.

Furthermore I understand why Disney keeps greenlighting these remakes: money. Why dream up a new IP when you can just exploit an existing IP with a quick-and-easy live-action remake? Just take advantage of your audience’s nostalgia. But if that’s the case why are they spending so much damn money on these shitty remakes? This Snow White movie is supposedly costing a quarter-billion dollars to make.

@santoanderson - Really id say thats the only good one. Instead of copy and pasting the animated version, they readapted the source material. Peter Pan also did that but was very bland and doesn't come close to the 2003 version, and misses a lot of the point.

@santoanderson - I agree, I own that on Blu-Ray.
