THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN Star Emma Stone Eyed For Titular Role In CRUELLA
Following the immense success of Maleficent, Disney is moving ahead with another villain origin story and they may have just found their leading lady in former Amazing Spider-Man star Emma Stone.
Back in 2014, Maleficent, which starred Academy Award-winner Angelina Jolie (Kung Fu Panda 3) in the lead, cooked up over $758 million at the worldwide box office and now Walt Disney Pictures are gearing up to tackle another villainess origin story.
Last night, The Hollywood Reporter broke the news that Disney is currently in early talks with Academy Award-nominee Emma Stone to play the iconic Disney villainess Cruella de Vil in Cruella.
The film, which will re-imagine the origin of the classic 101 Dalmations character, doesn't have a director yet, but the project is said to be a priority for the studio as they hope to shoot the film sometime this year. Kelly Marcel (Saving Mr. Banks) is penning the script with Andrew Gunn is producing.
If Stone signs on, she would be the fourth actress to portray Cruella de Vil in live-action. De Vil was first brought to life by six-time Academy Award-nominee Glenn Close in 1996's live-action 101 Dalmations and its sequel 102 Dalmations, and was most recently portrayed by Victoria Smurfit on ABC's Once Upon A Time and by Wendy Raquel Robinson in the Disney Channel original movie Descendants.
Emma Stone will be seen next alongside Ryan Gosling (The Nice Guys) in Damien Chazelle's La La Land. She most recently starred in Cameron Crowe's Aloha & Alejandro G. Iñárritu's Birdman, the latter of which earned her an Academy Award nomination. Outside of those films, she's probably best known for her work in Marc Webb's The Amazing Spider-Man series as Gwen Stacy, Tate Taylor's The Help, Will Gluck's Easy A, Ruben Fleischer's Zombieland, Fred Wolf's The House Bunny, & Greg Mottola's Superbad.
