DOCTOR STRANGE IN THE MULTIVERSE OF MADNESS Tops THE BATMAN As Highest Grossing Release Of 2022 In U.S.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness has managed to surpass The Batman's domestic box office total to become the biggest movie in the U.S. this year. Find more details after the jump...

By JoshWilding - May 30, 2022 07:05 AM EST

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness arrived in theaters earlier this month to kick off the summer box office season. Over the past few weeks, the Marvel Studios sequel has remained at the top of the box office, but its streak ended this weekend with the debut of Top Gun: Maverick in multiplexes.

That movie has massively exceeded expectations, though we're not exactly surprised when it's such a feel-good action blockbuster. It certainly wasn't a bad weekend for the Doctor Strange sequel, though, as it earned a solid $16.4 million in North America.

Its expected four-day Memorial Day weekend total is likely going to be around $21.1 million, taking its domestic cume to $375.47 million. That means Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness has passed The Batman's $369.31 million to become the biggest movie of 2022 in the U.S. We're not even at the year's halfway point, of course, so it may not hold this record for long.

Stephen Strange's latest adventure also grossed $22.9 million internationally this weekend, taking its global total to $868.7 million. Will it eventually hit $1 billion? Probably not at this stage, though we do anticipate it eventually crossing the $900 million mark - no easy feat post-pandemic.

"Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is a one of a kind blockbuster experience and a pure, unadulterated Sam Raimi movie that, while not quite the crazy ride through the Multiverse we expected, delivers a fun, horror-tinged trip," we said in our review of the sequel

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is now playing in theaters!

Marvel Studios Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness another HUGE WIN for Disney.

Don't think it'll win the summer, prolly gonna be either Top Gun or Jurassic World. Or maybe Thor, we'll see.

@tmp3

Have avoided the JW trailers but caught some tv spots recently and it looks so bad.

@DoubleD - this post is about domestic box office bro, i'd be surprised if maverick missed $400m dom which is something strange will just scrape by. could see top gun legging it to $500m, even, since wom is next level good (A+ cs, 99% audience score)

@DoubleD

“ Top Gun: Maverick will lose domestic too”

It’s gonna be closer than you think, DoubleD.

@regularmovieguy - I predict JW at the top domestically with big opening and normal legs for a 200 plus opener which is 6 or 700s. Top Gun will have phenomenal legs but from 150 opening I figure 4 or 500’s. Strange will be 400’s but yes lower than top gun.

@DoubleD

Lol…a little context, my buddies who don’t go to the movies every month like I do, have seen Top Gun before me and all of them have been raving about it.

One said he thinks it might be his favorite movie theater experience.

Feel like you’re underestimating the audience response to this movie.

@regularmovieguy - believe the hype, one of the best sequels i've ever seen. one of the cruiser's best performances too, no cap. just a, dare i say, perfectly constructed blockbuster

@DoubleD

The world is bigger than your sister and husband. That’s not the only unsolicited text I got this weekend about Top Gun 😐

The A+ Cinemascore and 99% verified audience leave zero doubt it’s going to have great legs.

@tmp3

Everyone I’ve talked to has said the same thing. Haven’t seen this much unanimous praise thrown at a summer blockbuster in a long time.

@DoubleD - so you know two people who were turned off from the fact Tom cruise is in the movie, and that's proof it won't do that good? First of all it's very clear your family is in the minority as Tom cruise is like one of the last big named actors out there (as in, selling tickets just with the fact he's starring in it). Second, most people can separate cruise from his religion. It's politics that matter more than religion today, and even then it depends how outspoken you are. It's not like top gun is a scientology recruitment film or anything.

I'm still kind of in awe of how bizarre and uneven this movie actually is. I had a good time, and I'm sure it will hold up pretty well on MCU rewatches, but it's just such a weird cultural artifact.

@Spock0Clock - accurate. Alright just gonna break it down with how I felt about it as it went along:

The opening scene was exciting enough.
The wedding was a wedding, I guess I felt how I was supposed to feel. Like, just get through this lol
Monster attacks the city, wasn’t paced well to me. I think it’s about here that the score stuck out to me in a bad way.
Nothing meant to be funny stuck the landing for me.
Strange conjures up a weird critter to bite the monster, it was more like “what was that” then “coool”
Giant hand spell also was not on the level of Spiral the 6 arm spell or other cool spells.
America was meh. I don’t feel like bashing a teenager’s feelings but she was just not like penis Parker and friends. Uncharismatic.
Explanation of dreams felt hokey.
The orchard, the attack on Titan, All things Wanda were perfect but one, the bad cgi when she came out the mirror.
Going through the portal was cool.
Earth 2 was 👎🏿Green is stop red is go? That’s the best you could do? Stop trying to look like Demolition Man.
Bruce Campbell great as always.
Hey at least we get mordo in some form but marvel, that’s a loose thread, ya jerks.
Illuminati, all cool, but here comes strange with some more not funny jokes.
Wanda sleepwalking made the dream thing retroactively less hokey like ok I see where you’re going. Please continue.
BOY OH BOY did that song her kids sang give me the cringe! It was horrible! That was corrrrrrNY, son!
Wanda slaughtering the Illuminati was 👏👏👏👏👏

No need to go through the rest, I liked everything from that point forward. I used to rate movies by 5 stars with 1&2 negative and 3-5 positive but I needed one more on each side so now 1-3 is negative and 4-7 is positive. First time I watched it I gave it 5 stars. Second time I dropped it to 4. The cringe when those kids sang…

@TheWalkingCuban - everytime marvel releases a movie we have to suffer bs mini reviews and fake top 10 mcu list for the purpose of trying to bring down the current mcu movie.

🤦🏾‍♂️ EVERY TIME

@BO31 - bro can I just be honest about a movie without you whining, I’m guessing if my review were perfect I’d never hear from you but it’s not worth lying over, it didn’t attain to NWH and yet I give it a positive star rating, it’s at the lowest of the positive star ratings for me. Still a win. But not for you cuz you want it to be my favorite movie or else not talk about it. Too bad chump!

I didn’t like I didn’t want to see from trailers I wasn’t pleased after I saw it wasn’t as good first one,
