Warner Bros. (via Toonado) has debuted the first teaser trailer for Greta Gerwig's live-action Barbie movie, and we're pretty sure it won't be what you were expecting!

The Helen Mirren-narrated teaser begins by paying homage to, of all things, 2001: A Space Odyssey, as we see a group of children cast away and destroy their baby-doll toys when the statuesque figure of Margot Robbie's (The Suicide Squad) eponymous fashion doll appears like the Monolith from Kubrick's sci-fi masterpiece.

After a wink from Barbie, we're transported to the neon-pink world inhabited by the iconic doll, her boy-toy Ken (Ryan Gosling), and several other characters played by the likes of Simu Liu, America Ferrera, Ncuti Gatwa, Issa Rae, and Kingsley Ben-Adir.

Check out the teaser and poster below.

Robbie is also producing under her LuckyChap Entertainment production banner along with LuckyChap’s Tom Ackerley.

Plot details are still under wraps, but we do know that Barbie and Ken will somehow find themselves in the real world, where the former will be faced with the challenges of being a "live woman."

“We like the things that feel a little left of center,” Robbie told THR during a recent interview. “Something like Barbie where the IP, the name itself, people immediately have an idea of, ‘Oh, Margot is playing Barbie, I know what that is,’ but our goal is to be like, ‘Whatever you’re thinking, we’re going to give you something totally different — the thing you didn’t know you wanted’ … can we truly honor the IP and the fan base and also surprise people? Because if we can do all that and provoke a thoughtful conversation, then we’re really firing on all cylinders.”

Barbie is set to hit theaters on July 21, 2023.

Who the hell is the target audience for this movie?

2001 rip off

then sets that look straight out of the cat and the hat movie

parts feel like only something adults would get, others look for kids.
