Dungeons & Dragons Directors Say Hasbro Is Still Seeking Studio Partner For Sequel

Will Dungeons & Dragons 2 ever see the light of day? Directors confirm a completed script exists as Hasbro searches for a new financial partner.

Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves might have stumbled at the box office back in March 2023, but it has quietly built a massive fanbase on home video and streaming.

The general consensus is that the fantasy film taking home only $209 million on a $150 million budget doesn't reflect just how good the movie was, as critics absolutely loved it, handing out a 91% on Rotten Tomatoes thanks to the pic's sharp humor, inventive magic, and incredible cast dynamic.

While fans have been begging for a sequel (even if it lands straight on streaming), the directorial duo of John Francis Daley & Jonathan Goldstein recently dropped a promising update; namely that Hasbro is still determined to make D&D 2 happen, even if they have to shop it to a different studio.

Goldstein told The Playlist, "I think Hasbro is a big believer in it, and if they can figure out a studio partner to make it work, they’ll want to proceed. As are our producers."

Daley chimed in, "I mean, look, it’s something that is near and dear to our hearts in that we loved making the first one. We fell in love with the characters, and there’s so much potential in a sequel because the first act isn’t filled with exposition or introduction to this family that we’ve already become accustomed to. So you can kind of launch right into the story, which is really nice.”

He also commented on the financial challenges, stating, "Yes, there are practical realities with the finance contingent, and who knows if it ever gets made, but we were proud of the sequel script and hope that at some point it does find a path."

Who needs heroes when you have thieves?

A charming thief and a band of unlikely adventurers undertake an epic heist to retrieve a lost relic, but things go dangerously awry when they run afoul of the wrong people.  Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves brings the rich world and playful spirit of the legendary roleplaying game to the big screen in a hilarious and action-packed adventure.

The ensemble cast is led by Chris Pine as the bard Edgin Darvis. Michelle Rodriguez stars alongside him as the fierce barbarian Holga Kilgore, Justice Smith plays the insecure sorcerer Simon Aumar, while Sophia Lillis rounds out the core party as the tiefling druid Doric.

Regé-Jean Page appears as the noble paladin Xenk Yendar, while Hugh Grant plays the charming yet villainous rogue Forge Fitzwilliam.

Is he a Goldstein or a Goldenstein? Maybe he's the Goldestein?

So, (I'm just asking) is D & D still popular enough to support a blockbuster budget and enough interest in theatrical viewings against other blockbusters?

@LSHF - I have a feeling it's more popular than ever thanks to actual play shows like Critical Role, Dimension20 and Dungeons & Daddies to name a few

@bkmeijer1 - Well, cool; thanks. It's a shame to see studios lose too much money. If it makes enough profit, then all sides benefit.

This was a weird one. Critics adored this film. It should have done better at the box office with reviews like that. I'm not saying it should've made a billion dollars or anything, but definitely underperformed. Van Helsing did better like 20 years earlier with a similar fantasy/humor tone.

@BackwardGalaxy - And Van Helsing is shit.

We need to stop pretending this movie was some [frick]ing masterpiece. It was barely decent, and that’s it. It absolutely does not deserve a sequel. It’s nowhere near as good as everyone has collectively decided it was.

Sweet , hopefully a sequel does happen since I liked the first film and wouldn’t mind continuing on a new adventure with those same characters or even different ones given the format of the game.

P.S: checked out their recent film “Mayday” too last night and found it enjoyable though not as strong as D&D or Game Night which were their previous directorial efforts!!.
