The Hobbit is an upcoming two-part epic fantasy film directed by Peter Jackson. It is a film adaptation of the 1937 novel of the same name by J. R. R. Tolkien and prequel to The Lord of the Rings film trilogy. Jackson, director of The Lord of the Rings, returns as director of the film and also serves as producer and co-writer. The film will star Martin Freeman as Bilbo Baggins and Richard Armitage, known for playing Lucas North in the BBC drama series Spooks, as Thorin Oakenshield. Several actors from Jackson's The Lord of the Rings film trilogy will reprise their roles, including Ian McKellen, Andy Serkis, Hugo Weaving, Cate Blanchett, Christopher Lee, Ian Holm, Elijah Wood, and Orlando Bloom. Additionally, composer Howard Shore, who wrote the score for The Lord of the Rings film trilogy, has confirmed his role in both parts of the film project. The two parts, entitled The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey and The Hobbit: There and Back Again, are being filmed back to back and are currently in production in New Zealand; principal photography began on March 21, 2011. They are scheduled to be released on December 14, 2012 and December 13, 2013, respectively.

Yes YES YEEESSS

One thing though, they should have stuff from the silmarillion in there, like the war of wrath. IDK how to tie it in, just do it. Or, we could force Peter to make like a 7 movie silmarillion epic which i approve of

Who cares about the battles. Action and battles is not what makes these movies great. If all u want is battles go watch Transformers or Expendebles or something.

The title is understated. He did more than mention Smaug. This scene has me super juiced right now.

Critics can eat a fat dick.

As far as the Silmarillion goes, the copyright is owned outright by the Tolkien estate, as opposed to the other novels, and they have opposed the movies. They did lift their objection to some of the added material to allow Jackson to make The Hobbit a teilogy, though, so there's always hope...

for the silmarillion, i think they should do it with avatar animation style, that book is way too big for a movie adaptation, its gonna be hard to pin everything down to finish it, i mean they couldn't even finish the new narnia with the new movies.. actor's get too old, or dont want to be tied down to a franchise, directors want to do other stuff.. animated is the way to go i think..

@BackwardGalaxy

see it's like this, people don't always agree on everything, that happens.. some, like me, think that Gollum was the best CGI character ever.. or like SuspenseSmith said, some, (maybe you) think that honor belongs to jar jar binks..

That is awesome! I am greatly looking forward to this! I want to see a First Age/Second Age prequel trilogy after this one completes, that would be so much fun!

@BackwardGalaxy - Don't worry, if we all liked the same things then the world would be boring. The fact is I grew up a Star Wars fan from the 1970's and wouldn't even read LOTR despite many arguments with fanboys about which was better.

One viewing of Return of the Jedi killed SW fandom dead forever. The 4th trailer for Fellowship of the Ring got me into this and after reading all the books there simply isn't anything as well conceived and executed as LOTR be it film or books. They simply can't make enough movies about Middle-Earth to satisfy me, I already got two tickets for two showings in one day, one IMAX 3D and one 48fps! After that I'll be in 2D heaven for the rest of December on my free cinema pass. :-)

With the Silmarillion, I feel it would be impossible to do a movie series of. I'd rather see The Children of Hurin made into a film.
