The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power is set to premiere with a double episode on September 2, and the social media embargo for those first two instalments lifted late last night following a special screening.

For the most part, the first reactions have been very positive. The Prime Video series has received high praise for its scale, scope, visuals, and cast, while the majority of critics seem to agree that this world looks and feels like a return to Middle Earth.

We actually haven't come across any outright negative Tweets yet, but it sounds like the show does take a bit of time to get going, and viewers may find some characters in the sprawling ensemble to be more compelling than others.

Check out the first round of reactions below. We'll update as more are shared.

Amazon Studios’ forthcoming series brings to screens for the very first time the heroic legends of the fabled Second Age of Middle-earth’s history. This epic drama is set thousands of years before the events of J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, and will take viewers back to an era in which great powers were forged, kingdoms rose to glory and fell to ruin, unlikely heroes were tested, hope hung by the finest of threads, and the greatest villain that ever flowed from Tolkien’s pen threatened to cover all the world in darkness.

Beginning in a time of relative peace, the series follows an ensemble cast of characters, both familiar and new, as they confront the long-feared re-emergence of evil to Middle-earth. From the darkest depths of the Misty Mountains, to the majestic forests of the elf-capital of Lindon, to the breathtaking island kingdom of Númenor, to the furthest reaches of the map, these kingdoms and characters will carve out legacies that live on long after they are gone.

The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power stars Morfydd Clark, Benjamin Walker, Charles Edwards, Charlie Vickers, Markella Kavenagh, Nazanin Boniadi, Ismael Cruz Cordova, Tyroe Muhafidin, Maxim Baldry, Cynthia Addai-Robinson, Owain Arthur, Trystan Gravelle, Sir Lenny Henry, Ema Horvath, Markella Kavenagh, Sophia Nomvete, Megan Richards, Dylan Smith, Leon Wadham, Daniel Weyman, and Sara Zwangobani.

I’ll give it a watch, but the trailers were basically just like: “See these characters? They exist.”

@soberchimera - you mean by not giving too much away? I’m cool with that

We'll see. I'm still predicting a whole lot of good, maybe even great. But also a lot that cheapens the magic of Tolkien's original work.

You think this will be interesting for someone who watched the LOTR trilogy exactly once?

@AmazingFILMporg - yes because early reactions are always indicative of a film's/show's quality. Those guys will take L's in life regardless of this show though!

But the winner get's to write the history, or they did before social media gave people the ability to claim their own "truth" regardless of facts.

@AmazingFILMporg - No. Bothsideism would require me saying that both sides are exactly the same and be done with it in order to make it easy for myself. That's not what I'm doing. I am intensely aware of the different motivations and ideologies at play in this deeply disturbing political divide we're all stuck in.
Believe me, I want to root for the progressives again, but boy are they talking and doing a lot of repulsive bullshit lately that I just can't play along with anymore. Society is stuck in a cycle of outrage and even though the right "started it" (apperantly this is the kindergarten level we're at) and even seem to be doing it intentionally, the left is absolutely doing its part to keep it going. And I'm at the point where I'm simply too annoyed, frustrated and exhausted to still be a part of this. If that makes you think of some buzzword to call me, then go nuts, bro.

Look how toxic this has gotten. You are viewing a TV-show and its success as some kind of battle to be won in this ongoing culture war for crying out loud! I don't even know what's more insane: That that's what entertainment has come to, or that that's what activism has come to. Where is this supposed to be heading? Evidently trying to overshout and "own" the other side is not doing shit except making things worse. It seems the only solution is deescalation. Which, no, does not mean to let actual hate and bigotry stay unchallenged, but it certainly doesn't mean to spew more fuel into that fire and pat yourself on the back for being oh so virtuous.

Bottom line: Everybody chill out, you petulent children.

@Drace24 - when the people making said product make it a part of the culture war......yes.
Drace24
Drace24 - 8/25/2022, 7:24 AM
@AmazingFILMporg - I mentioned that. Because that's how it works. That toxicity comes from a deeply rooted divide between political ideologies, either of which using culture war narratives to pit people against each other and this is how this shit happens. These ideologies are left- and right leaning. But you can absolutely use your own preferred buzzwords if you want. Like "woke" and "anti-Woke" or whatever. The principle is the same.
WarMonkey
WarMonkey - 8/25/2022, 8:57 AM
@Drace24 - Yes. Did you see the first article that was released which was the first material about the show? It was a direct attack on Tolkein fans calling us racist and sexist before the first trailer or pics were even out. This is literally a production created to push propaganda for one side of the culture war. Just listen o read to what the people at Amazon or the Diector and actors and saying.

Also these early screening were hand-picked for not being actually LOTR fans and are shills. I don't recognize all those reviewers but the ones I do I know will ALWAYS give praise to any product that was changed from the original and made sex or race changes to the characters. These are shallow people.
WarMonkey
WarMonkey - 8/25/2022, 9:01 AM
@AmazingFILMporg - "losers that have been infesting fandom".

What an interesting statement. So according to you billions of Tolkein fans around the world are infesting the fandom because they expected a show based on his work to actually be based on his work and not just using his name to sell a product that was intentionally made to change his story, characters and world?
WarMonkey
WarMonkey - 8/25/2022, 9:10 AM
@Drace24 - "A war has two sides, bro" is a great point. The "woke" crowd pushing these things have control of the mega-corporations (entertainment and others), the gov't bureaucracy with all 3 branches, vast majority of billion dollar news organizations, and multi-millionaires with social media presence.

So basically they have the majority of uber-rich folks that have set themselves apart from the masses by location, fences and walls around their neighborhoods and houses, and don't go to any place that isn't expensive to enter which keeps the "normal or regular" out and are preaching to everyone that we must follow them or be punished or bullied.
