Narnia: The Magician's Nephew In Trouble? New Report Claims "Everyone At Netflix Thinks [It's] Awful"

The first trailer for Narnia: The Magician's Nephew seemed to go over well enough, but there are rumors of behind-the-scenes clashes between director Greta Gerwig and Netflix...

Netflix released the first teaser for Greta Gerwig's Narnia: The Magician's Nephew this week, and while the "Stairway to Heaven"-accompanied footage seemed to go over pretty well with fans of C.S. Lewis' beloved series of fantasy novels, there have been whispers that all may not be going particularly smoothly behind the scenes.

Jeff Sneider previously said he'd heard that there might be tension between Gerwig and Netflix film chief Dan Lin, possibly stemming from the movie's (rumored) massively inflated $280 million budget.

Now, the Hot Mic co-host has shared some more details.

“It’s 100% true, and everyone at Netflix thinks the movie is awful. It’s a genuine problem,” said one source. Another likened Narnia to Ava DuVernay’s 2018 adaptation of A Wrinkle in Time, which reportedly ended up losing Disney $100 million.

They added that, when the movie ended after a recent internal screening, "the lights came up, the air went out of the room. It was bleak."

"The reaction to that test screening led Netflix to order reshoots, and a third source indicated that Narnia wouldn’t be the first time Gerwig needed an assist in post-production to 'find' her movie," Sneider writes. "I’m told that at least one individual — an experienced editor or director, or possibly both, and heretofore unreported — was brought into the editing room to 'save' Barbie, which initially had WB chiefs Mike De Luca and Pam Abdy 'very worried.'"

At the end of the day, even if this is accurate, all that matters is how the movie turns out. Narnia is set to arrive in theaters next February, which gives Gerwig and Netflix a bit of time to iron out any kinks - or bring on a fresh pair of eyes, if so required.

"It’s my understanding that Gerwig tried to get out of doing Narnia following Barbie’s overwhelming success, but Netflix, understandably, wouldn’t let her out of the deal. After all, it had the hottest director in town. But I don’t expect Gerwig to return for the Narnia sequel — if there is one," Sneider concluded.

Have another look at the trailer below, and let us know what you make of this report in the comments.

Academy Award–nominated filmmaker Greta Gerwig brings C. S. Lewis’s beloved story The Magician’s Nephew to the screen for the first time in a sweeping adventure that invites dreamers of all ages to experience the creation of Narnia.

The movie stars David McKenna, Beatrice Campbell, Emma Mackey, Carey Mulligan, Ciarán Hinds, Daniel Craig, Meryl Streep, Kobna Holdbrook-Smith, Denise Gough, and Susan Wokoma.

Mark Gordon, Amy Pascal, Vincent Sieber-Smith, and Greta Gerwig produce Narnia: The Magician's Nephew, with Patricia Whitcher, Racheline Benveniste, Christine Crais and Douglas Gresham, and Melvin Adams for the C. S. Lewis Estate serving as executive producers.

If there's one silver lining to be gained from todday's internet slop - AI or not - it's this appreciation for pre-/mid-2000's internet comedy.

@TemporarilyHere - Agree. When internet content was fairly a new thing and it was kind of like the wild west. Everything wasn't so serious nor scrutinized.

The fact that Netflix hired someone who disregards the source material on various levels, will result in the poor decisions haunting them. The movie looks goofy as could be.

@ImBatman4realz - As someone who was a huge fan of the source material as a kid, it's something that I have a hard time imagining anyone adapting well. A couple of those books definitely definitely don't lend themselves to an on screen adaptation.

@grendelthing - Totally agree. It would be extremely difficult to adapt the whole Narnia series (especially for audiences hoping for linear continuity).

But with the right creative team it could be done imo. It would just take a lot of work and heart to keep the creative license decisions as close to the source as possible.

I was going to say, if it's that bad, they wouldn't already be promoting, but then I remembered that this is Netflix we're talking about.

@MarkCassidy - In all fairness, Jimmy Page and Robert Plant only agreed to license the song after seeing the movie. This is literally the only time they've allowed anyone to use it.

@DocSpock - Since they changed the actor voice's gender, they might as well have made it a lioness. It'll be funny to see a lion with that mane talking with the voice of a near 80-year-old woman...

@DocSpock - You just know that Aslan's mane is going to be some kind of purple/green/pink/blue. They'll say its to show how majestic he is...but when they also give him the Rachel Madcow glasses....THATs the dead giveaway...

It's unfortunate when something that would have ended up being cool ended up like a hobo fart in the wind.

Choosing the right director for the right project is important Netflix is to blame wanting to force it to happen.

@theFUZZ008 - I have to debate you here. Movie was way better than a Barbie movie deserves. It had an obnoxius progressivist pAtRiArChY strand in it but also had a fall, promise, and redemption narrative (funny enough). On top of that it (probably on accident) affirms actual traditional feminitiy by affirming motherhood and the self sacrifice involved in that as better than girl boss land that Barbie lives in.

And in fact, the movie has some good gags in it too. Again, there's plenty of eyerolling stuff in that movie but it was actually clever at not sucking lol

Because that's how we assess whether what someone said is empirically true or not.
How many likes did they get on their comment.

Tight logic there, bud.

I stated an empirical FACT (The film was a financial and arguably critical success).
