To mark Percy Jackson's birthday, Disney+ has released (via SFFGazette.com) a new teaser for Percy Jackson and the Olympians.

Based on Disney Hyperion's best-selling book series by award-winning author Rick Riordan, we've also learned that the show will debut with a two-episode premiere on Wednesday, December 20, with new episodes following weekly. As of now, we don't know how many episodes the first season is going to consist of.

This sneak peek suggests the series will be a lot more faithful to Riordan's books than the largely underwhelming movies, offering an intriguing glimpse at what's to come. Oh, and we're sure the WWE fans among you - who will find the latest pro wrestling updates on TheRingReport.com - will appreciate a first look at Edge as Ares.

Riordan - whose books have sold more than 100 million copies worldwide - worked closely with the creative team and showrunners Jon Steinberg and Dan Shotz to bring his books to life and deliver a series that stays true to his vision for these heroic characters that millions of book fans know and love. The first two episodes were written by Riordan and Steinberg and directed by James Bobin.

Take a look at the first Percy Jackson and the Olympians teaser below.

Percy Jackson and the Olympians tells the fantastical story of a 12-year-old modern demigod, Percy Jackson, who's just coming to terms with his newfound divine powers when the sky god, Zeus, accuses him of stealing his master lightning bolt. With help from his friends Grover and Annabeth, Percy must embark on an adventure of a lifetime to find it and restore order to Olympus.

The series stars Walker Scobell (Percy Jackson), Leah Sava Jeffries (Annabeth Chase), Aryan Simhadri (Grover Underwood).

Notable guest stars include Lin-Manuel Miranda (Hermes), Megan Mullally (Alecto aka Mrs. Dodds), Toby Stephens (Poseidon), Virginia Kull (Sally Jackson), Jason Mantzoukas (Dionysus aka Mr. D), Jay Duplass (Hades), Glynn Turman (Chiron aka Mr. Brunner).

We'll also see the late Lance Reddick (Zeus), Adam Copeland (Ares), Charlie Bushnell (Luke Castellan), Dior Goodjohn (Clarisse La Rue),  Jessica Parker Kennedy (Medusa), Olivea Morton (Nancy Bobofit), Suzanne Cryer (Echidna), Timm Sharp (Gabe Ugliano), and Timothy Omundson (Hephaestus).

Percy Jackson and the Olympians hits Disney+ on December 20 with a two-episode premiere.

The over-reliance on the volume has begun. That looks rough. Using it should be all about suitability.

@GhostDog - yeah. You really need to know how to use it, like in the mandalorian.

Besides 2 shots which look kinda rough , I think this looks cool & intriguing otherwise.

Also , releasing this the same day as Edge’s potential final match makes me happy to see him doing well regardless if it won’t be in a wrestling ring anymore.

@TheVisionary25 - Dude had an amazing career and came back from a career ending injury. At least he got to leave on his own terms this time.

@TheVisionary25 - holy shit! I came to the comments to ask who the dude in the beginning of the trailer was and ask why he looks like Edge.

I haven't watched wrestling for 20+ years and I am geeking so hard.

Time for me to hit the books! I didn't read them previously, but even I can tell the movies weren't faithful adaptations of the series!

The books were always a bit YA for my taste, but they are good for what they are. If this is good, I hope they continue with the other series by this author based on other culture’s mythologies. The Kane Chronicles - based on Egyptian lore - was my favorite.

Looks decent. hopefully better than the films. The books were fun kid adventures and I enjoyed them.

Unlike other people on here, I don’t mind the use of the Volume for television at all. Yes it can look cheaper but it is a way TV can look closer to big-budget quality without the big budget. I more dislike it when it’s used excessively in 200 million dollar films. You have the money for a set. You’re just being lazy.

I like both the movies, they are fun adventure movies. One of the main reasons though is Alexandra Daddario is in it so I think I'll be skipping this Disney version. I would have never rewatched those movies if she or another super hot girl wasn't in it. I like them but they really aren't good movies. Having some eye-candy is useful for stories like this cause we all know the writing and story will suck coming from Disney corporate employees. And what a huge downgrade the lead dude is too.
