The Odyssey Sails Past $600M Worldwide On Its Journey To $1 Billion; Universal Responds To Recent Leak

Though Spider-Man: Brand New Day will definitely slow its momentum this weekend, Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey has now passed $600 million at the worldwide box office...

The Odyssey continues its epic box office run after its second weekend in theaters.

Christopher Nolan's critically-acclaimed adaptation of Homer's mythological tale has now earned $285 million domestically and $353.2 million overseas after just 10 days in theaters.

The movie's global total now sits at $639.6 million.

The R-rated sword-and-sandals adventure will be tested this weekend when Spider-Man: Brand New Day swings into theaters, but box office analysts don't foresee a significant third-weekend drop, and The Odyssey should have no problem clearing $1 billion by the end of its theatrical run.

“Once or twice a year a movie opens big and then plays for weeks and weeks,” says David A. Gross, who publishes the box office newsletter FranchiseRe. “The Odyssey is showing that kind of holding power.”

“The Odyssey has crossed over from hit blockbuster to global cultural event,” adds IMAX CEO Richard Gelfond. “Our results indicate that audiences around the world will line up to experience this one-of-a-kind film in IMAX for weeks, if not months, to come.”

Like most major studio releases, The Odyssey has not escaped some significant leaks. A high-quality bootleg of the film reached millions of people on X thanks to a viral tweet on July 25, and remained online for two and a half hours before being replaced by a takedown notice.

Universal shared the following response with Deadline.

“We became aware of the unauthorized posting of the film and immediately initiated takedown protocols. We take copyright infringement seriously and will pursue all appropriate remedies to protect our content and intellectual property rights."

"Christopher Nolan’s next film The Odyssey is a mythic action epic shot across the world using brand-new IMAX film technology. The film brings Homer’s foundational saga to IMAX film screens for the first time and opens in theaters everywhere on July 17, 2026," said Universal Pictures in a statement when the project was announced.

The poem has been adapted (sometimes very loosely) a number of times before, starting with the 1911 silent film by Giuseppe de Liguoro, and followed by 1954’s Ulysses starring Kirk Douglas. The Cohen Brothers' O Brother, Where Art Thou? (2000) is also based on the epic adventure, as is 2024’s The Return starring Ralph Fiennes.

Anime fans may also recall the '80s Ulysses 31 series, which put a futuristic spin on the tale.

Watching the Critical Drinker and other rage bait chuckle [frick]s moving goal posts and trying so hard to make this a fLoP is SO SATISFYING. People call me crazy when I said this would make a billion dollars and now that's easy peasy money. More like 1.3bn. Sorry racist, bigots, and clickbait haters

@bobevanz - No, people just call you crazy. They don't add context because none is needed. You're not against bigotry you just want to be the one deciding who it's acceptable to target. That's hypocrisy, plain and simple.

Stop whining all the time. You're worse than the ones complaining about the movie.

@XRayCat -

Your bigoted enablers switched their approach from "this god-awful shit is gonna bomb" pretty quickly to "meh, 'twas just mid". Which, as anyone sane or even remotely honest can attst to, is the coward's way to bash on something they cannot properly criticize. Can't call someone a hater when they're not actually hating after all, right?

You are as moronically gullible as you are painfully transparent to read. Follow your leaders' example and cower behind your constantly moving goalposts.

@TemporarilyHere - You really proved my point by immediately assuming my political views.

That's the pattern of you cultist, you don't evaluate arguments, you sort people into teams. Independent thought doesn't seem to exist in your echo chamber; you just recycle whatever gets the loudest applause.

Then, without a hint of self awareness, you turn around and display the very bigotry you claim to oppose. The funniest part? You'll walk away convinced you won, having learned absolutely nothing.

I'm sorry, "won"? Don't flatter yourself. You are not important enough for me to consider you my opponent, let alone enough for me to put any effort in order to "win".

You are a symptom of the greater disease that your aforementioned enablers propagate and spread, completely ignorant to the consequences.

But make no mistake, I do not walk away. Never have never will. Want me gone? Beg your elders. Given their own tolerance to your values, or your lack thereof, they'll be more than happy to oblige.
XRayCat
XRayCat - 7/26/2026, 4:53 PM
@TemporarilyHere - That's beyond hypocritical. You accuse others of being a "disease" while pretending to occupy the moral high ground. Dehumanizing people with that kind of rhetoric is exactly the sort of intolerance you claim to oppose. It's amazing how often those preaching against bigotry become its most enthusiastic practitioners the moment someone disagrees with them.

Correction: I actually called you the symptom. The actual disease is embodied by those way, waaaaay above you. I know it's hard when you're this used to parroting points you do not fully comprehend, but please, for the sake of decency when it comes to one on one conversation, do try to keep up, could you?

@bobevanz - @bobevanz - Please provide evidence where the Critical Drinker said this movie was going to flop? His contention before the film was released was with the casting and modern dialogue, he never said it wouldn't make money far as I can tell. Otherwise, YOU'RE the one moving the goal posts.

@FleischerSupes -

I am Greek, and parts of this movie made me frustrated due to how they were removed or altered, (the "nobody" pun, Phaeacians and Nausicaa, Lotus being implemented in Calypso, etc), but I enjoyed its direction and narrative almost incalculably more than any isolated complaints I may have.

Plust, as the right likes to behave (while unconvincingly pretending otherwise), it sure seems to make the right people cry, so that is always a win.

Are there complaints to be had? Sure. Are those most vocally advocating said complaints even remotely familiar with the source material? F#ck no.

Homer's epic exists. It will always exists. That is the Odyssey. This here is a more than well made adaptation of it.

I was promised that this film was going to bomb hard because it was not historically accurate and it was woke. It is like the right wing makes sh*t up, keep repeating it, and wait for the dumbest among us to go along with their deranged agenda.

I mean hell, they promised lower grocery prices and...wait????

@Forthas - Well, to be fair if you leftist tools would wake up to reality for a change you all wouldn't have a series of rude awakenings all the time. But instead you all choose to live in your little hypocritical eco chamber, which is why you idiots thought that Hillary and fake black lady would win the election.

Nobody with any credibility ever said the movie would fail. Just tattoo "retard" across your forehead already and get it over with.

Who said it would bomb?

I don't recall anyone saying anything other than Nolan sells tickets and that two things can be true and the same time: it could be a decent film with some stupid ideas.

It looks like a DEI Oscar Checklist that Nolan used to Troll The Universe to me.

He literally took the most retarded Hollywood policies and checked all the boxes.

They can hold the Academy Awards at his house - he rigged the whole [frick]ing thing - which is brilliant.

He trolled the entire world.

AI Overview
No single prominent individual or official entity predicted that Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey would bomb; rather, that claim originated as a generalized narrative driven by anonymous users and anti-woke commentators across social media platforms like YouTube and Reddit.

I know there were shitloads of people grousing about the cast and the use of extremely modern dialogue - both of which are stupid choices as is the weird casting in my opinion. That's not predicting failure though.

But I cannot find a single named source that called for it flopping.

I think it's the woke crowd so desperate for a win that they can't help themselves but create boogeymen to dunk on.

Who said it was going to bomb?

Sweet , I’m actually about to go see it in the next half hour or so thus very excited…

If The Odyssey does reach 1 billion (which it likely will since besides Spidey , the competition is little to none for awhile) , that will make it the fourth billion film of the year behind The Super Mario Galaxy movie , Michael and Toy Story 5 which reached a billion this weekend and is now the highest grossing movie of the year so far.

Anyway , really want to check out Motor City aswell!!.
