Many of you probably signed up for and got involved with the viral marketing for Green Lantern. They allowed people to sign up and receive emails and created elaborate websites to explore. Well days after the movie opened to a $52.7 million weekend, I have received a new email from the Newton Astronomers Guild.
"Hi there
The guys that run NASA's Spitzer Space telescope asked us to pass on
their thanks for your help in working on the Cygnus Anomaly. The
classification work you did on the green rings has made a measurable
difference to the scientific effort, and between all the friends of
the Newton Astronomers Guild you classified thousands of images.
If you'd like to know more about what will happen to that data, please
have a look at the Milky Way Project ( http://www.milkywayproject.org/).
They are taking forward the work of finding out what is out there
in the cold dust of space.
We're really grateful for all your help and support over the last
crazy weeks. If you'd like to know next time something like this
happens, just reply to this email and we'll keep your address on file.
No spam I promise.
All the best,
Ben, Ellie, Brian and Ivo"
Also attached was a certificate indicating that I am now a member of the Newton & District Astronomers Guild. (Yhatzee!)
I'm in like Flint now!
