BOX OFFICE: GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY Rockets Past $400 Million Worldwide

With over $222 million domestically (a figure which puts it on course to be 2014's highest grossing movie in North America), Guardians of the Galaxy hit another landmark this weekend with a current worldwide total of over $400 million. Read on for details!

By JoshWilding - Aug 17, 2014 09:08 AM EST

After earning an additional $24.7 million this weekend by again finishing at #2 (behind Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and in front of new release, The Expendables 3), James Gunn's Guardians of the Galaxy has a current total of $222.3 million in North America. With an additional $196.4 from overseas locations, that gives the movie a worldwide cume of $418.7 million after opening a little over two weeks ago. Bear in mind that it has yet to hit countries like Japan and China, so those will help push its numbers even higher. Of course, Guardians of the Galaxy still has plenty of time to earn more in the countries it's currently showing in, though it's difficult at this point to predict where it will finish. The Amazing Spider-Man 2 earned $708.2 million, Captain America: The Winter Soldier took $714 million and X-Men: Days of Future Past sits on top with $744 million. Still the year's highest grossing movie though is Transformers: Age of Extinction with over $1 billion.

X-Men was the best followed closely by Winter Soldier. Guardians wasn't too far behind though.

@rebellion

It won't do more worldwide but will pass them domestically.
There's a lot of reasons for the movie doing less money in foreign countries, some references are not well known and it lose some humor in other languages.
Is had to see it in spanish the 2nd time and it wasn't as good

If more people support this movie and boycott next year's Fantastic Four abomination we could end up getting a GotG sequel featuring anything from Galactus, The Silver Surfer, Uatu to The Skrulls when the FF's rights revert back to Marvel. Fans of great CBMs and supporters of the MCU should all do their part.

I don't know that it's fair to compare Guardians of the Galaxy with the second, third or fourth iterations of those other films. It would perhaps be more accurate to compare Guardians with the first ASM or Cap or X-men as a new comer franchise. If you count the Sam Raimi films then Spidey has had 5 films to gain an audience. Cap had his first film plus The Avengers and I can't even count all the X films (well I can, but I don't want to). So, while I know ticket prices are not commiserate, still it might be more accurate to try and compare the first appearances of all said franchises. Just sayin'.

This Sumer has been great so far from the movies I seen other than "The Amazing Sony-Slave".

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, Guardians of the Galaxy, and Only Lovers Left Alive are tied for my number one spot for 2014.

My 2014 Summer move dance for you guys.

The public ARE idiots. Jesus, that should be common knowledge that there are more stupid people in the world than there are intelligent.

It'll be the biggest grosser of the year Domestically, at least until the big end-of-the-year holiday releases. It's already out-grossed Spider-Man and Godzilla, will out-gross X-Men and Transformers next weekend or so, and will eventually top Captain America 2 to be the top Comic Book Movie of the Year in North America.

Who would have guessed that?

Hopefully, when the actuals come out tomorrow it will be $320,000 higher enough to gross $22 million higher than Cap 2 and enough to forge a full $419 million worldwide for Guardians of the Galaxy. Hopefully, next weekend Guardians will surpass $500 million worldwide.

Alright, Marvel fans and movie fans in America. We can still get Guardians of the Galaxy to gross $25M this weekend before tonight, so get it gross an extra $320,000 by tonight to get it gross $25.05M by tonight to close the gap on $419M worldwide for Guardians and enough to stay on par with Captain America: The Winter Soldier's third weekend of $25.6M. Then, from Monday through Thursday, get Guardians to gross $17M with $5M tomorrow, $5.5M Tuesday, $3.75M Wednesday and $2.75M Thursday. Consider following my advice, guys. Ok, thanks. ;)

@Tetrahedron Ah, the average Marvel corporate slave. Wishing for other people's failures, but if anyone says anything negative about a marvel produced film, they're fanboys. Or better yet, not supporting a "marvel masterpiece" means you're an idiot.
