Guardians Of The Galaxy: Amanda Seyfried Feared Marvel Movie Could "Ruin" Her Career

Amanda Seyfried has revealed why she turned down the chance to play Gamora in Guardians of the Galaxy, admitting she feared James Gunn's Marvel movie would be a flop and ruin her career.

It's now hard to imagine anyone other than Zoe Saldaña playing Gamora in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. However, The Housemaid star Amanda Seyfried was once said to be at the top of Marvel Studios' wish list.

After being cast, Saldaña would go on to play Gamora in three Guardians of the Galaxy movies, two Avengers movies, and even a holiday special on Disney+. Seyfried has still found plenty of success, but that's a lot of well-paid work for any actor to miss out on.

During a recent Q&A with SAG-AFTRA Foundation, the Long Bright River star said she has no regrets about turning down a role in James Gunn's 2014 blockbuster and admitted that, at the time, she had little faith in it being a good movie.

"I think turning down Guardians of the Galaxy was just so obvious to me at the time," Seyfried explained. "I’m like, 'This is not going to be a hit. The tree and the raccoon are talking to each other. And also they’re all in space.' And I was just like, 'This will ruin my career if this is bad. And there’s a high chance that this could be bad.'"

Seyfried continued, "I mean, obviously I was wrong. But I still don’t take back that decision. I made it for myself. I made it for my family that I knew I wanted to have. And I just don’t want to spend all the time in the makeup trailer. I just can’t sit still anyway. I really don’t like stunts, and I don’t like heights, and I don’t like pretending the entire world. I need something to hold on to."

It doesn't sound like Seyfried has any interest in boarding another superhero or action franchise, likely explaining why she hasn't shown up in the MCU or DCU over the past decade.

X-Men: First Class star Jennifer Lawrence has never shied away from how hellish it was being transformed into Mystique, so it's not difficult to see why Seyfried was reluctant to head down a similar route. However, Saldaña has never really had anything bad to say about her experiences with Marvel Studios, though her time in the MCU appears to be over.

"I mean, so far, I think that she is [gone for good] for me, but I don’t think Gamora has gone for good," she said in 2024 about her hope to see someone else take over the role. "I would think it would be a huge loss for Marvel if they didn’t find a way to bring back The Guardians of the Galaxy."

"It’s just such a fan-favourite group of misfits, you know? And then at the helm, they had a voice like James Gunn’s writing—which is just so marvellous and very specific for this genre," Saldaña continued. "And it’s so great for this genre as well. So, I would be the first one in the first row to sort of celebrate when the Guardians of the Galaxy come back."

Do you think Seyfried would have been a good fit for the MCU's Gamora?

Reboot the MCU and DCU

@FireGunn - Does her agent suck for keeping her from getting an MCU role that would have affected her career - or is the MCU dogshit and need to be rebooted? Talking out of both sides of your ass here bud.

She's a better actor than 90% of the people in MCU.
FireGunn
FireGunn - 10/26/2026, 9:37 AM
@foreverintheway - She's an overrated dogshit actress who's been in nothing but trash since Mean Girls.

Her career would've been affected for sure... In a positive way. The entire GOTG cast is all doing objectively better and more relevant than her with the exception of Bradley Cooper.

"or is the MCU dogshit and need to be rebooted? Talking out of both sides of your ass here bud."

I can think her and her agent are absolute retards while still wanting to reboot the modern 2026 MCU. You're an idiot.

Everything with you is overrated and trash and yadda yadda but like - you ARE a Snyder bro? Like I already know what your definition of quality is haha like I've literally seen you on here glazing Gal Gadot. "#walletsclosed"

@foreverintheway - It was hyperbole. I like Ms. Seyfried. My point stands.

Also, I've NEVER glazed Gal. Once. Ever.

@FireGunn - So if you like her why would you call her a dogshit actress who has done essentially nothing if you actually like her? That's not hyperbole - that's contradiction. You're retarded.

@foreverintheway -talk about being willfully ignorant. This whole topic is about the MCU in its prime, while FireGunn has always been adamant about the current abhorrent states of both DC and MARVEL. To conflate the 2 eras and manipulate facts in a sad attempt to "catch" FireGunn in a slip up is overwhelmingly retarded. Don't use retard logic, it make you look retarded. Think shit through before you speak. The fact that he even says Reboot rather than cancel the MCU and DC immediately implies he has faith in the property, just not the direction it's currently under. He's always wanted better because he saw when both DC and MARVEL once were better. Your logic of "well is her agent bad or is the MCU dogshit" is you ignoring so many obvious facts in order to obviously bend the narrative to attack FireGunn was so painfully stupid, it was hard to read. I actually thought you were comedically playing a retarded troll for a joke at first until I read the rest of your follow up comments and realized you actually think you are right. Lol

I'm glad that since you knew I was 100% correct and you had absolutely no way to respond with anything credible or logical, you decide to take a few moments to conjure the most original come back in the history of snaps. Gay jokes in 2026... I'm not even mad lol just disappointed. I was hoping you were hiding your cleverness, but alas, you had nothing to hide.

@vectorsigma - lol okay now that is kinda funny, considering his name lol

But even I understand that James was at least tolerable when he was doing GotG, but is insufferable now as head of DC with this trash he's been responsible for. The only good DC stuff under his watch has been the few okay things released he had minimal involvement with.

But you're right, this was a soft Gunn endorsement from FireGunn 😂

@TheAmericanHero - LOL "retaliation" bro you are doing so much heavy lifting in defending someone elses position - even going as far as assuming what their intent is. A level of glazing so absurd I don't actually feel the need to rebut anything you actually said - no actual arguments, just assumptions of someone elses argument.

"The fact that he even says Reboot rather than cancel the MCU and DC immediately implies he has faith in the property, just not the direction it's currently under. He's always wanted better because he saw when both DC and MARVEL once were better."

LMFAO Like are you FireGunn? "He has ALWAYS wanted BETTER" with hearts fluttering in your eyes hahah

"The fact that he even says Reboot rather than cancel the MCU and DC immediately implies he has faith in the property, just not the direction it's currently under. He's always wanted better because he saw when both DC and MARVEL once were better."

Yeah buddy I am not going to spend time considering his use of reboot over cancel or revitalize or any other word that he could be using. His intent is a snappy sign-off, nothing worth considering there.

While I understand actors and their fear that something can ruin their career, It kind of screams "I'm destined for greatness". I feel like the Oscars have truly poisoned Hollywood and the general public into believing that that pretentious system is what decides what's art and what's not. As you can tell by how Martin Scorsesee carries himself. Meanwhile Christopher Nolan puts out banger after banger and each film has its own bonkers storyline with some amazing set pieces and top notch acting. Art is subjective. And if actors are afraid to show their artistic capabilities then that is an insecurity thing. Nick Cage is a testament to pushing boundaries with great and awful movies but he follows the art of the game.

I understand where she’s coming from completely. She says she doesn’t like pretending and needs something to hold on to. Even the actors in it, talked about how silly they felt the first time thinking things will come out goofy but being surprised with how good it looks in the end.
WruceBayne
WruceBayne - 10/26/2026, 12:40 PM
@MyCoolYoung - absolutely. Imagine a director trying to sell the role of Groot to you or that Rocket Raccoon is his name but he’s not actually a raccoon but every aspect of him visually is. Or the main characters father is a living planet. That’s a “Toxic Avenger” level pitch right there. Lol

It worked out for both actress. Also, both very good actors that have very good careers so, it worked out. Hindsight is 20/20. I would have never expected GOTG to have been a hit, on paper. Gunn made that happen and had the vision to make that happen. With a different director it could have been pretty bad.
