Karen Gillan On JUMANJI Topping GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY And Going Up Against STAR WARS At The Box Office
Guardians of the Galaxy and Avengers: Infinity War actress Karen Gillan spoke with Screen Rant to discuss Jumanji's success at the box office, and revealed what she tends to value most from audiences...
Jumanji is now Sony Pictures' second highest-grossing release of all-time at the domestic box office, accumulating approxiamtely $393.13 million. Just $10 million away from topping 2002's Spider-Man to become Sony's top domestic release. Adding on the movie's international earnings, Jumanji has earned $930 million worldwide.
Karen Gillan, star of both Guardians Of The Galaxy films and the upcoming Avengers: Infinity War, recently spoke with Screen Rant for Jumanji: Welcome To The Jungle's home release, which is available now on Digital and out on Blu-Ray on March 20th. She discussed the cast's awareness and confidence in going up against Star Wars: The Last Jedi as well as talking Jumanji's success, which financially exceeded everybody's expectations.
I think we all had confidence in it, but it was still a ballsy move to release up against Star Wars because that’s just, yeah, that’s like a crazy thing to do, I think. We all felt like it was a really strong film, but I don’t think any of us anticipated quite this level of success. I mean, it’s turned into a bit of a phenomenon. I mean, we’re all just jumping up and down, we’re celebrating. It’s incredible and so exciting that people are enjoying it.
Releasing around a Star Wars movie and standing its ground is something not many people would've expected from any movie, let alone a 20 year late sequel to Jumanji. Something else to note is that Jumanji is now Gillan's highest-grossing movie. Topping Guardians of the Galaxy at $773.3 million and its sequel at $863.75 million (at the worldwide box office). To that Gillan says that she's just happy to be a part of these movies that everybody is enjoying.
I feel incredibly lucky to be involved in things that people are enjoying as much because it’s not always the case. It’s quite rare to be involved in things that people care about and you’re constantly trying to make people care about your projects [laughs], and to just be involved in [things] people are clearly enjoying is just the most rewarding part of all of this because I think the most important thing is the fans audiences who are watching the things.
At the moment Jumanji is the actress' highest grossing film but that could all change with next month's release of Avengers: Infinity War. Though that could again change when Jumanji 3 hits theatres against Star Wars: Episode IX in 2019.
With Karen's sentiment of simply wanting to make audiences happy in mind, which of her movies did you enjoy the most?
