Kevin Feige Says NOVA Has "Immediate Potential" At Marvel Studios And Addresses What Comes Next

Nova was supposed to make an appearance in Guardians of the Galaxy but that didn't happen. Since then, fans have been wondering when we'll see him in the MCU and Kevin Feige has now elaborated on that.

There are now only a handful of characters we're waiting for Marvel Studios to bring to the big screen but one name which pops up, again and again, is, of course, Nova. The cosmic superhero could easily hold his own in a solo movie or the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise but seeing as James Gunn doesn't appear to be a fan of the character, that latter option doesn't seem at all likely for Vol. 3

When Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige was recently asked about the chances of Nova coming to the big screen, he confirmed that's a character they're well aware has "immediate potential."

"[If] we have a big board with a bunch of characters that have more immediate potential, Nova is on that board," he said much to the delight of fans. "Because of the connection to the Guardians universe, because there are more than one examples to pull from in the comics that are interesting. And you’re absolutely right, he was in the earliest drafts of the [Guardians of the Galaxy]."

Feige wouldn't elaborate on what's happening with the character beyond that but did say that Marvel is waiting for Avengers: Infinity War to be released before settling on what comes next. "We're figuring those things out. It is a very unique embarrassment of riches right now because there are so many of the characters that audiences are clamoring to see more. The question is how do we show them all?"

Do you think there's a chance Nova could show up in Avengers 4 or is Marvel probably holding off on introducing him further down the line? As always, be sure to let us know your thoughts below.

4. The Sentry
5. Hyperion

@BillWonka - Squirrel Girl and the New Warriors are tied up on TV and Spider-Woman is likely in contract limbo between Marvel and Sony.

But even so, that's a pretty dire list and I think demonstrates that we shouldn't be too hasty in letting the current crop of heroes go. There are a lot of villains out there who haven't been adapted. Better to pit them against existing heroes rather than dig deeper into the barrel.

(Though how Tigra and Wonder Man didn't make that list, I can't imagine.)

@TheUnworthyThor - But damn that didn’t even include Ghost Rider or Blade or Bloodstone or any supernatural characters. Yeah there still a whole lot of Marvel characters I want to see on the big screen.

@BillWonka -
Here are mine, in no particular order:

Moon Knight
Adam Warlock
She-Hulk
Captain Britain
Nova
Spider-Woman
Namor
Thunderbolts (especially Songbird)
Moondragon
Black Knight

Didn't include New Warriors since we know it has a pilot, at least.

D-Man. How can people forget about D-Man?

But some villain teams I'd love to see before the MCU becomes X-centric:

Masters of Evil
Thunderbolts or "Dark Avengers" however you want to do them
Sinister Six (or, you know, whatever number they land on)
Squadron Sinister or Squadron Supreme (would really love a JMS-inspired
villain-protagonist team that splits the difference)

And... don't laugh, but Serpent Society. I just need to see Gwendoline Christie as Anaconda. And not wasted would be nice.

Does James Gunn expressly dislike Nova? And what sort of power levels are we talking after the introduction of Captain Marvel, Adam Warlock and Nova?
BloodyBed
BloodyBed - 4/23/2018, 4:21 AM
@ChangAlang - hasn’t he said he disliked nova?

Rocket raccoon is the only guardian he has gotten right, so I really don’t have high hopes for nova. I bet it’s Sam and they make a bunch of kid and puberty jokes even though they’re doing that with Groot.

@BloodyBed
@Changalang

He said he wanted to focus on Peter being the only one from Earth, not that he hated Nova, and that was about those first two movies specifically, I believe.

As for getting Rocket "right," that would likely be because Gunn identifies most, and completely with that character. To his core he has said that Rocket is Gunn. I imagine that is why Sean Gunn provides the mo-cap for the character.

Regardless of whether we get Rider, I do believe that Rhoman Dhey (Jon C Reilly) will be the one to survive Thanos' attack on the Nova Corps, and he will lead into whichever Nova he trains for us.

@JacuzziJoe - I could see them doing a gender bent Sam Alexander and having her be Dhey's daughter.
JacuzziJoe
JacuzziJoe - 4/23/2018, 9:07 AM
@MNLawyer - It would only work if she were an Earthling, otherwise the audience connection is lost. Dhey's daughter is pink and whatever race Bereet is, or at least half.

Thanks for the explanation @JacuzziJoe😊

I had only read stuff from hear and this article pointed towards the dislike Nova so thought I’d ask.
JacuzziJoe
JacuzziJoe - 4/23/2018, 10:49 AM
@ChangAlang - Of course! I'm not sure where my love for Nova came from, but I think Sam scratches my teen Peter Parker itch that the comics haven't hit in a while.

“There are now only a handful of characters we're waiting for Marvel Studios to bring to the big screen...”

Really? Because my list is still quite long.

Oh and I hope it is Richard Rider, Sam Alexander sucks.
JacuzziJoe
JacuzziJoe - 4/23/2018, 6:55 AM
@TheUnworthyThor - I think of Sam as the cosmic Peter Parker. He is to the guardians as kid Spidey is to the Avengers. It's an entirely new perspective. I definitely think there is potential for Rider as well, but I wouldn't write off Sam. He has more original story potential for the big screen that wouldn't seem like a rehash, and that's the key to preventing fatigue.

@JacuzziJoe -

I totally agree with you 100%

even tho I like Richard Rider's incarnation
I'd love to see Sam Alexander story done in the MCU

besides, it opens the gateway for hispanic heroes
just as Black Panther did for kids, Nova (Sam) could do the same.
JacuzziJoe
JacuzziJoe - 4/23/2018, 10:01 AM
@Equivocal - Definitely! Nova and Ms Marvel have been very culturally accurate, and I'd love to see those demographics also represented. We need that.

Adam Warlock is definitely the biggest miss for me, but objectively Namor should probably be number one on a list. And with the merger with Fox coming along, let’s face it. Kang is without a doubt the biggest villain miss, and who knows? Maybe thats the big reveal for Avengers 4...

So something like:

1) Namor
2) Kang
3) Adam Warlock
4) She Hulk
5) Nova
6) Spider Woman
7) Moon Knight
8) Hercules
9) Wonder Man
10) I gotta go with Black Knight, one of my all time favorites, even though I don’t think he’d ever work in a movie.

@Pigdango - Kang? No. Doom, yes
Pigdango
Pigdango - 4/23/2018, 4:11 AM
@PicolasCage - I was thinking more of characters that we've never seen. And to be honest, if I never see Green Goblin or Doctor Doom again I'd be fine with that. After so many poor attempts, I'm not sure it's even possible to get them right.
TheRose
TheRose - 4/23/2018, 5:24 AM
@Pigdango - Heck yea to Black Knight! I would love to see a movie of him facing off against the High Evolutionary or Morgan Le Fay. The character has a great balance of science and magic that could be great for the MCU.
ThunderThighs
ThunderThighs - 4/23/2018, 3:30 AM
Richard Rider? Yes. He always had Peter Parker vibes, that are currently missing from the real Parker. He could fill that role.

Sam Alexander? No. He has probably the lowest IQ that has ever been showcased by any super-hero I read so far. He is basically Patrick Star in a bad-ass armor.
Asturgis
Asturgis - 4/23/2018, 3:40 AM
@BootyPeep - Just call him by his real name, Kid Nova :)

One of the worst characters Marvel Comics has created these past few years, to be honest. I'm not even sure why Marvel went through that phase of making everyone into teens or kids again, because their core readers, their target, is definitely between 20 and 30 years old, and I doubt very much they care about Kid Nova or X-Men Blue. Someone like America Chavez, who's a young adult, is relatable for everyone, but Kid Nova? Not even close.
ThunderThighs
ThunderThighs - 4/23/2018, 3:57 AM
@Asturgis - As far as I remember, Jeph Loeb created him when the cartoon Ultimate Spider-Man started, as a tribute to his dead son.
Tragic story behind this character, but not really a flattering tribute.

And Kid Nova is more fitting, true.
