Nova Update Shared By Filmmaker Michael Waldron — Will He Cast Glen Powell In The Movie?

Marvel's Nova movie gets an update from writer-director Michael Waldron, who shares his love for Richard Rider and responds to rumours linking Twisters star Glen Powell to the MCU role.

Marvel Studios has had mixed fortunes with introducing new characters during the Multiverse Saga. Some have failed to connect with fans, while others have taken off big time (a few even debuted, only to vanish into the ether).

We first met the Nova Corps in Guardians of the Galaxy in 2014. There was nothing in that movie to indicate that they had any recruits wielding the Nova Force, and the intergalactic police force was decimated off-screen by Thanos before Avengers: Infinity War started.

Following rumours of a TV series, it's since been confirmed that Marvel Studios is in the early stages of developing a Nova movie. If handled the right way, it stands a chance of adding a mighty new hero to the MCU and perhaps even bringing the Guardians back sans James Gunn.

Loki Season 1 Head Writer and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness scribe Michael Waldron is attached to write and direct the movie, and he shared an update on the project while speaking to Variety for Chad Powers Season 2.

"I don’t even know what I can say as an answer to this question without my computer just catching on fire. But I love the character of Nova," he shared. "I love Rich Rider, and I’ve gotten to work at Marvel with a bunch of great filmmakers. I worked so closely with Sam Raimi and learned so much from him."

Waldron continued, "He is the biggest influence for me as a filmmaker; everything on 'Chad Powers' is filtered through Sam, because watching how he did it was my film school. So, to get to write and direct a movie for Marvel would be a dream come true. I hope it gets to happen."

The trade cheekily asked whether he's figured out a way to cast Glen Powell in the movie (the Running Man star is a popular suggestion for Richard Rider), prompting him to reply, "These are the questions to be hypothetically asking someone who was hypothetically directing the movie. But that person, if they wanted to hold on to that job, should not answer those questions."

Nova has been through a few iterations, and we know at least one version was going to revolve around Rider rebuilding the Nova Corps after Thanos' attack on Xandar, just as Annihilus and his Annihilation Wave invaded.

Glenn Close and John C. Reilly were being eyed to return as their Guardians of the Galaxy characters, with Sam Alexander also expected to appear. We'll see what happens with Waldron's version over the next few years.

@JFerguson - get over it already

@JFerguson - I mean that wouldn't be hard lol. But I'd like the second act at least to focus on his Human Rocket era, which is mostly him being a teenage superhero on Earth. Then take him to space for the third act finale.

@JFerguson - What comic-book fans want to see costumed superheroes flying in space and zapping aliens with ray-beams when you can have a "murder mystery" slowly unfold on earth instead featuring a grizzled, burnt-out racist? 🤨

I wouldn't mind a movie with both Rider and Sam in a mentor-mentee dynamic. Could be Rider is the tutor of the first class post-Thanos decimation, and Sam is one of the cadets.

@bkmeijer1 - yeah , that could be cool

Maybe Richard was already a Nova but was off world during Thanos attack hence he survived but found some sort of capsule or energy source back on Xandar (something they got from experimenting on The Power Stone) which gave him his powers and now he is trying to rebuild The Corps with new members with one of them being Sam which could be the central relationship of the movie as this mentor-mentee/big brother-little brother dynamic.

@TheVisionary25 - exactly. Wouldn't mind Rider being the first recruit either. Maybe only Rhoman Dey survived and built the Corps back up

@bkmeijer1 - that wouldn’t be bad either.

Dey could be the new Nova Prime essentially.

@TheVisionary25 - great idea. Waldron better be reading along

This could be cool but Waldron better step up his game in a big way.

If they had any sense they would have introduced Nova into another existing franchise before making a movie around him. The problem is the general cinema goer will never of heard of him, a bit like the Eternals, and therefore interest could be low.

@Spike101 - If the early pre-production is to be believed, it was SUPPOSED to be NOVA flying desperately to earth and crashing into Dr. Strange's home to warn him of the coming of Thanos. Also (once again; supposedly) it was going to be NOVA crashing into and taking down the Flying Fortress of Thanos during the final battle of ENDGAME instead of Captain Marvel. 🫤

@SuperiorHeckler - that would have made such more sense. He should also have been walk through cameo in one of the Guardians movies, even if uncredited.

@Spike101 - I usually agree, but it's gonna be really hard not to make Nova look cool for the average movie goer.

Yeah , he is definitely working on the film though I didn’t know that Waldron would be directing it aswell…

I feel like that’s a bit risky because he’s only directed some episodes of his recent show “Chad Powers” so it’s not like a Matt Shakman situation who had experience of mainly directing episodes of tv shows until Wandavision where he directed an entire miniseries which impressed Marvel enough to let him do Fantastic Four but we’ll see since this would be a major upgrade in scale & scope for Waldron.

Anyway i do hope Nova happens and turns out well though , i could see it being released in 2029 but plans can always change so fingers crossed!!.
