James Gunn Clarifies Whether AVENGERS:ENDGAME Resulted In Changes To GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 3

Did Gamora's sacrifice in Avengers: Infinity War and the return of a younger version (who doesn't know Star-Lord) in Endgame change what James Gunn originally had planned for GOTG Vol. 3?

Where Star-Lord and company left off at the end of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is vastly different from where the Benatar's crew find themselves at the end of Avengers: Endgame.  For starters, Gamora is "dead" and her younger self is now trapped in the present.  There's also the matter of Thor now traveling with the Guardians who are presumably on a mission to go find Gamora (who scattered to the winds as everyone mourned Tony Stark's death).  However, Thor: Love and Thunder will be released before Vol. 3 hits theaters so the God of Thunder will likely be parting ways with his new space-faring friends long before MCU fans see the Gamora/Star-Lord dilemma resolved.

With all that said, and the drama surrounding Gunn's firing and re-hiring, have plans for Vol. 3 changed?  Taking to Instagram for a fan Q&A in-between shooting scenes for WB's Suicide Squad sequel, Gunn stated, "The script will change because my scripts always keep changing up until the moment I shoot them. But it won't change according to anything from Endgame, because I already knew what was in that script before I wrote Guardians 3."

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is due to start filming in late-2020.  Gunn was originally confirmed to  write and direct Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 in April 2017. Controversy surrounding his old jokes on Twitter led Disney/Marvel to fire Gunn in July 2018. Following support from his cast and other key Marvel Studios execs, Gunn was rehired in March 2019.  He is expected to complete work on The Suicide Squad in early-2020.

Been watching his Q&A’s on Instagram...James seems like a great dude. And he’s genuinely really funny.

Would love to see him knock GOTG 3 and SS out of the park.

I liked Vol 2 more than 1 so I'm excited to see how he will end things. Lots of places to go after the emotional roller-coaster of Vol 2.

Me, getting hyped for Guardians 3 and simultaneously remembering it's at least 3 years away

I think the plans were never to have Thor appear in Guardians of the Galaxy 3. Marvel announced Thor 4 to be released before Guardians 3 and thus probably put them together at the end of Endgame knowing that Thor 4 would see him going solo again before Guardians 3

@MalseMarcel - Well remember that the original plan was to release Guardians 3 in 2020 before Thor 4 in 2021, until the whole James Gunn drama happened, so who knows what they would've done with Thor if they had stuck with the original plan

@eagc1995 - I dont believe Thor 4 was announced back then. But indeed, who knows what happened (Feige probably)

@MalseMarcel - Yeah Thor 4 wasnt a thing back then, the film was announced this year, while Guardians 3 was announced since 2017 and it was set to begin filming last February, the James Gunn drama happened in 2018 and Marvel ends up removing the July 2020 date off the schedule now that Guardians wasnt going into production as originally planned.

Curious to see how they separate Thor from the Guardians. I'm assuming Love and Thunder will be the one to do that. Gunn probably won't even have to deal with it.
