BOX OFFICE: EVIL DEAD Starts Off Strong; JURASSIC PARK 3D Set To Take Second Place
Early numbers are in for this weekend at the North American box office, and it sounds as if Fede Alvarez's Evil Dead will be frightening A LOT of people over the next few days! The 3D re-release of Jurassic Park meanwhile looks set for a so-so second place.
Deadline reports that Fede Alvarez's Evil Dead remake took $1.8 million last night for what studio execs are reportedly calling one of, "the best late show openings of the year" and "A great start for the film." This means that early estimates of a $20 million+ weekend are now looking to be closer to around the $30 million mark. Not bad at all for a movie with a budget of only $17 million. As for Jurassic Park 3D, that took $462,652 at late night showings, although this is nowhere near the $1.3 million earned by Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace last year. Steven Spielberg may have overseen the 3D conversion, but will that be enough to draw in moviegoers? It's thought that the re-release wil tale only between $15 million -$18 million for the weekend.
