I KNOW WHAT YOU DID LAST SUMMER Sequel In The Works With Jennifer Love Hewitt & Freddie Prinze Jr.

Following the roaring success of Scream (2022), Sony is getting in on the legacy sequel game and have seemingly greenlit an I Know What You Did Last Summer sequel with Jennifer Love Hewitt set to return.

"What are you waiting for?!"

Well, it sounds like Sony's finally tired of waiting as Deadline is now reporting that the studio is moving forward with an I Know What You Did Last Summer sequel from director Jennifer Kaytin Robinson (Do Revenge; Someone Great).

While it's still very early in the development process, both Jennifer Love Hewitt and Freddie Prinze Jr. are in talks to reprise their roles as Julie James and Ray Bronson, respectively, and the buzz seems to be pointing toward them both coming back in a major way. The duo previously appeared in the 1997 slasher classic and its 1998 sequel.

Leah McKendrick (Deviant LoveM.F.A.) is penning the script, which is based on an original sequel idea she developed with Robinson. Their pitch reportedly "blew away studio execs" last fall, and was aided by Paramount scoring big with Scream (2022) as well as Robinson receiving rave reviews for Netflix's Do Revenge

Robinson also has some Marvel cred on her resume, having served as a consulting producer on Hawkeye and was one of the writers on Thor: Love and Thunder

No further details are known just yet, but, if everything goes according to plan, we'd imagine this one could go into production before the end of the year, possibly setting the stage for a 2024 release date.

Not totally shocking. This was clearly meant to be similar to the Scream franchise. The Ghostface killer became iconic. The fish hook killer, not so much. But who knows, maybe they could revive it. I think there was a show, not too long ago. Been meaning to check it out.

@99OPTIMISTPRIME - Isn't this story like an old urban legend though? I mean, I get what you mean. It was definitely made to piggy back off of the success of Scream. But I believe the story itself was around much longer than Scream.

@CorndogBurglar - Sure. I was referring more to the original movies themselves, in the late 90s. Both horror movie franchises, centered around the same female protagonist. I'm surprised that formula hasn't been repeated more often...successfully.😂

I guess they’re going to just forget the ending of I Still Know What You Did Last Summer when Jennifer got (what they heavily suggested) murdered lol

@TheLobster - I suspect they'll do a similar thing that they did to address the ending of the first movie, where they just say it was a dream. It was fairly ambiguous anyway, given that the killer should absolutely have been dead at that point.

@ObserverIO - Why, tis the year 1997 my good fellow! Dial Up Internet is all the rage, Batman & Robin was released months ago, along with the successful movies Men In Black, Liar Liar, and of course in recent news the hit slasher movie I Know What You Did Last Summer has just been released, with the highly anticipated sequel to Scream is on it's way in just a couple months! Now due to the success of I Know What You Did Last Summer, a sequel has just been announced to be in the works, with Jennifer Love Hewitt and Freddie Prinze Jr. returning in their roles!
