JOKER's Joaquin Phoenix Stars In New Trailer For BEAU IS AFRAID From MIDSOMMAR And HEREDITARY Director

The first trailer has been released for A24's Beau Is Afraid, a new "nightmare comedy" starring Joaquin Phoenix (Joker) and directed by Midsommar and Hereditary helmer Ari Aster. Check it out here...

A24 has just dropped the crazy first trailer for Beau Is Afraid (via FearHQ.com), confirming it will be released in theaters on April 21. Ari Aster's third feature after the critically acclaimed Midsommar and Hereditary, the "nightmare comedy" as the filmmaker has previously described it, certainly looks every bit as weird as his past work.

Academy Award winner Joaquin Phoenix (Joker) plays the movie's lead from childhood right through to old age, and a logline from last year offers at least some insights into what's happening here. It described Beau Is Afraid as "a decades-spanning portrait of one of the most successful entrepreneurs of all time."

Now, that's been followed by a relatively unrevealing synopsis that reads, "A paranoid man embarks on an epic odyssey to get home to his mother in this bold and ingeniously depraved new film from writer/director Ari Aster."

Between those and this eerie, very weird, first footage, we could attempt to figure out what's going on, but something tells us this is a journey that will be best enjoyed on the big screen.

Along with Phoenix, the movie stars Nathan Lane, Amy Ryan, Stephen Mckinley Henderson, Hayler Squires, Denis Ménochet, Kylie Rogers, Armen Nahapetian, with Parker Posey, and Pattie Lupone.

All signs point to it being based on Aster's 2011 short movie Beau, and we anticipate this effort finding just as much success as Midommer ($47.9 million) and Hereditary ($82.5 million) at the box office. Yes, it may look a little too odd for some people's tastes, but if nothing else, don't be surprised if a lot of moments from this trailer forever live on as GIFs on social media.

As noted, Beau Is Afraid arrives in theaters on April 21.

Hereditary was legit creepy, but Midsommar was overrated as f#ck. One is a horror family drama done right, the other's a young adult pagan revenge porn.

This one looks genuinely interesting though, especially with certain Wes Anderson influences. Plus, Joaquin's weight gain before shooting the next Joker is almost alarming. The man is devoted.

@DrReedRichards -

Midsommar was disturbing and engaging.

I honestly found no engagement in it other than Pugh's performance. Hereditary on the other hand had me legit invested, and that's coming from a guy who's more into body horror than hauntings.

@DrReedRichards - yeah I agree, characters were shallow and odd, and motivations were forced and convenient… my favorite was frat boy rapist who wanted to stay to write his thesis, lmao.

@tmp3 -

That's... kind of a relief, actually. Far less taxing and drastic of a transition to Arthur's anorexic figure.

@DrReedRichards - Midsommer is just a poor remake of the OG Wickerman, a truly genius horror film. Arguably the Citizen Kane of horror if you ask me.

@regularmovieguy

Do you wanna see hipster studios like A24 and filmmakers like Ari Aster take on horror icons like Michael, Jason and Freddie?

I always wonder how they would interpret slashers into their work🕵️

@BringFFtoMCU - Look at all the comments talking about it. There are obviously people that want this kind of content.

You can always not click on it if it isn't something that interests you. But instead you DO click it. And by doing that you're just adding to the amount of interest these non-comic book movie articles get.

So maybe do yourself a favor and just don't click them. It would help your own case. Because I can tell you stuff like this isn't going anywhere.

Hereditary, talk about a wasted opportunity for a good film?
