NEW "The Thing" Movie Stars Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Joel Edgerton

Edgerton (Smokin' Aces) and Winstead (Death Proof) will be starring in Universal's latest take on the alien shape-shifter for this reboot/prequel of the 1982 John Carpenter-Kurt Russell cult movie, which was a remake of 1951's "The Thing From Another World."

Matthijs Van Heijningen is directing and Ronald D. Moore and Eric Heisserer are the writers of the sci-fi/horror movie. Strike Entertainment's Eric Newman and Marc Abraham and are producing the project which has been many things from the Dark Horse comic books to video games.

Winstead is playing a Ph.D. candidate who joins a Norwegian research team in Antarctica once discovering an alien ship in the ice. When a trapped organism is set free, a series of nasty attacks begin, and Winstead is forced to team up with a a mercenary helicopter pilot to stop the horrific rampage who's played by Joel Edgeerton.

A March 15 start date is set in Toronto and thanks to Heat Vision for the heads up, link below.

LEEE777 - Well looks like some fan boys will be seeing Winstead in a comic book movie of sorts, maybe not Mary Jane but heck. Anything's going to be good with her in it.

Cool. I hope this is a good movie. I've seen Joel Edgerton in Star Wars and King Arthur and I think he's a good actor. He deserves more movies.

Great. Another opportunity for Hollywood to associate a great movie with a crappy prequel/reboot. Part of what makes John Carpenter's Thing so good, is that they DON'T fully explain what happened to the Norweigens, and they don't fully explain what happens at the end. One or both of the 2 remaining survivors could have been "Things". So now they'll make a prequel with some hot chick who doesn't look like she knows how to read, much less be a PHD, and they'll turn it into a more typical slasher-type flick.

hescian- I see what you're saying another thing
about, what made "the thing" a great movie
is..THERE WAS NO CGI..all of the effects
and MONSTERS where hand made,and you're right
the END left you hanging, which one was the
"thing" or were both the "thing"..AWESOME!

@peterparker420

Well, the right amount of CG can be a good "thing", but too much can hurt. Some CG in the original could have made it much better. For example, the scene where they are giving CPR to the guy and his head pops off. That part was awesome, but when his head grew legs (which was equally awesome) it looked corny when it was skittering along the floor. So, as long as they do a combo of real effects and CG, I think it will be a good "thing".

I don't know why they can't just call it a remake. What they've changed is the focus on the American Outpost to the Norwegian one. If they want to look at it as a prequel, they need to either change or add on to the title. Not sure how I feel about MEW being cast. I don't know if I can take watching her change into something straight out of the bowels of hell(if she is imitated at all, that is), without being severly disturbed. She's gorgeous, and talented to boot! I guess they really are "updating" it. For those not in the know, there were no women in the original. Interesting, nonetheless.
