Despite largely negative reviews, Other Mommy is set to conjure up a solid $27.5 million opening weekend. There was initially a lot of excitement among horror fans to see Jessica Chastain take on dual roles in this adaptation of Josh Malerman's Incidents Around the House, though that was lessened somewhat by a terrible 19% score on Rotten Tomatoes.
Despite a good start, expect a massive second-weekend plummet for Other Mommy, as it has 47% on Rotten Tomatoes' Popcornmeter and a dismal D+ CinemaScore. In other words, moviegoers aren't impressed.
As we're sure you're aware, CinemaScore is a market research firm that surveys audience reactions to newly released movies.
After attending opening night screenings, filmgoers rate films on an A+ to F scale, providing insights into audience satisfaction. Widely used in the film industry, CinemaScore helps gauge the initial reception of movies and influences box office predictions based on audience feedback.
Only Mommy cost $19 million to produce, so depending on what international numbers look like, chances are Blumhouse Atomic Monster will at least break even.
The Social Reckoning has also received a tepid response, with an expected $6 million opening weekend. It cost $30 million and had generated a lot of buzz as a sequel to The Social Network. However, with a B+ CinemaScore and 55% on Rotten Tomatoes, Aaron Sorkin's follow-up is falling flat with audiences.
Verity will be #2 this weekend with $13.3 million, with Resident Evil behind it at $7 million. Heart of the Beast is set for a $6.2 million third frame, meaning The Social Reckoning is opening in fifth. Primetime, Digger and Angel And The Bad Man round out the top ten.
Avengers Endgame: Encore has pretty much wrapped up its run in theaters after overtaking Avatar earlier this week to become the highest-grossing movie in history.
Other Mommy is a terrifying trip into the darkening world of a young girl, Bela, who forms a relationship with a sinister entity in her home that looks uncannily like her own mother.
Academy Award winner Jessica Chastain (It Chapter Two, The Eyes of Tammy Faye) stars in a dual role as Bela’s mother and as "Other Mommy," a manifestation of the entity. Jay Duplass (Transparent, Industry) plays Daddo, Bela’s father, and Arabella Olivia Clark (The Housemaid, The Hand that Rocks the Cradle) plays Bela.
The impressive supporting cast includes Actor Award nominee Dichen Lachman (Severance), Emmy and Tony Award nominee Arian Moayed (Succession) and screen icon Karen Allen (Indiana Jones).
