Practical Magic 2 Fails To Cast A Spell As First Reactions To Nicole Kidman & Sandra Bullock's Sequel Arrive

28 years after the first movie's release, Nicole Kidman and Sandra Bullock are set to reunite as modern-day witch sisters Gillian and Sally Owens for Practical Magic 2.

The sequel is set to hit theaters on 11th September, and the first reactions are now being shared on social media.

Though the first movie has developed a cult following over the years, it was far from a critical hit when it was released back in 1998, and was met with mixed reviews for what many perceived to be a jarring combination of different genres, including supernatural fantasy, horror, domestic abuse drama, romantic comedy, and crime procedural.

Practical Magic was also a box office flop, taking in just $68 million worldwide against a production budget of $75 million. This has led many to wonder why Warner Bros. thought a sequel would be a good idea, although it is worth noting that the new movie is expected to take in a very respectable $35M–$45M domestically when it arrives in theaters next week.

After vanquishing the spirit of Gillian's abusive ex-boyfriend, Jimmy, at the end of the first film, the sequel will find the sisters confronting a "dark curse that threatens to unravel their family once and for all."

New additions to the cast include Lee Pace, Maisie Williams, and Joey King, with Stockard Channing and Dianne Wiest set to reprise their roles as the Owens Sisters' aunts.

Though there are some positive reactions, it's fair to say that Practical Magic 2 failed to cast a spell on the majority of critics.

Practical Magic 2 returns to a world steeped in moonlit mischief and powerful ancestral magic, as the Owens sisters must confront the dark curse that threatens to unravel their family once and for all in a must-see cinematic event of fun, magic and mayhem.

Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman star, alongside Joey King, Lee Pace, Maisie Williams, Xolo Maridueña, Solly McLeod, Stockard Channing, and Dianne Wiest. Susanne Bier directs the project, from a screenplay by Akiva Goldsman and Georgia Pritchett, based on the novel entitled The Book of Magic by Alice Hoffman.

The film is produced by Denise DiNovi, Sandra Bullock, Nicole Kidman, and executive produced by Andrew Kosove, Broderick Johnson, Donald Sabourin, Alice Hoffman.

@TheNewYorkerr - is $35-40mil OW a flop for this type of film?

This had 0 marketing from what I can tell. It also implies its a sequel. Both of which I had never heard of before 2 minutes ago.

@ArthurFuchsache - I had seen a trailer for it and knew there was an original but given that movie was a flop , it’s odd to make a sequel to it even if it has a cult following.

@TheVisionary25 - Very peculiar 🤔 especially for a 30 year old film

@TheVisionary25 - I was looking for the comic book it was based off of...no I'm kidding, kidding. The age of nostalgia...continues.

The sequel will prob do pretty well because Bullock and Kidman are still major draws, but I have no idea why WB decided to take a chance on this when the first one tanked.

@Nolanite - It's who your avatar has been since forever. Walton Goggins character, from the HBO show "The Righteous Gemstones". He's hilarious in it

The mixed reactions is about on par with what I expected for the film but will be interesting to see the reviews once they come out…

I haven’t seen the original but this looked fine imo though it possibly making 35-45 million opening weekend is surprising which means it could likely topple BND for no 1 at the domestic box office but we’ll see (i guess that cult following is strong).

However ultimately i think it will underperform at the box office which will be another hit for WB aswell as Digger imo but Dune 3 will likely help them out to an extent financially!!.

Both of these women cannot emote at all. Their faces have been [frick]ed by plastic surgery and botox and its a shame.

Practical Magic is my younger sister's favorite movie. It makes me happy to see her excited for the sequel.

The first one was a cult fave that was a BO flop and has a 30% on RT...

It's clearly gained enough of a following after the fact to warrant a sequel. I suspect this one will be a hit with the fans.

The only magic on display is Kidman's new plastic surgeons. They somehow morphed her unnaturally wide fish face from Aquaman back into something that actually resembles Nicole Kidman.

The crazy shit is that literally only their eyes even look like them anymore. Cover their eyes and the rest of their face is just some generic chopped up pixie mannequin head.
