After being met with universal acclaim for his previous horror projects, Barbarian and Weapons, director Zach Cregger has been dealing with quite a bit of backlash for his upcoming Resident Evil reboot - even though nobody has seen more than the first 30 minutes of the movie.

A lot of fans are unhappy with Cregger's decision to ignore the established lore of the video games by introducing new characters and storylines.

"There are different kinds of Resident Evil fans," Cregger tells THR when asked about the negative response. "There are fans like me who love the experience of playing the games and think there’s never been a movie that has represented what it feels like to play Resident Evil. That’s how I categorize myself as a fan. Then there are fans of the games who specifically love the lore and the characters and the nitty-gritty details of the backstory.

But my movie is not spending a lot of currency on those things. I’m not putting any of the legacy characters into this movie. So if that is what you love about these games, then you’re going to feel a certain way about it. 'Here comes yet another Hollywood movie, and they’re once again not doing Leon and all the characters I was hoping they were going to do.'"

"I understand that perspective, but at the same time, I can’t let that affect my output. I have to make the best version of this movie that I’m capable of making and devote myself entirely to it. I cannot be worried about whether I am pleasing enough of every spectrum of fandom. If I tried to please everybody, I’d end up pleasing nobody. That much is obvious," he adds.

For the most part, Cregger stuck to his guns and made the movie he set out to make, but he did implement a few changes after feedback from test screenings.

"I learned that people really liked the movie, but they thought it was too funny. So over the course of my testing, I stripped out as much of the jokes as possible. I then found that not only did the audience enjoy the movie more, but I also liked the movie a lot more. A little bit of humor goes a long way in a horror movie, and there’s not a single joke I took out of this movie that I miss. So that perspective was really helpful."

Based on reactions to the first half an hour, Resident Evil is still pretty funny, so perhaps Cregger removed a lot of the jokes from the later part of the movie.

The filmmaker was also asked about the ending, and while he didn't give much away, he did say that fans will be surprised by how the movie wraps up.

"In a word, bigger. But I want to say so much more. I also think it’s surprising. I love the ending, and I’m very excited for people to see the ending. It’s so hard for me not to talk about it. The ending packs a punch. I’m really proud of it."

You can check out a new TV spot below.

From the mind of visionary filmmaker Zach Cregger (Weapons, Barbarian) comes a thrilling — and terrifying — reinvention of the Resident Evil franchise. In an all-new story, Resident Evil follows Bryan (Austin Abrams), a medical courier who unwittingly finds himself in an action-packed, non-stop race for survival as one fateful, horrifying night collapses around him in chaos.

The cast also includes Zach Cherry, Kali Reis, and Paul Walter Hauser. Cregger directs from a screenplay he wrote with Shay Hatten, and producers include Robert Kulzer, Zach Cregger, Roy Lee, Miri Yoon, Carter Swan, and Asad Qizilbash. The executive producers are Oliver Berben, Victor Hadida, Richard Wright, and Robert Bernacci.

Resident Evil is set to be released in theaters on September 18.

too many jokes huh? sounds like they were making a resident evil movie and someone said " ya know what. make mine marvel" and then they tried to dump as many john favrea, joss whedon, and james gunn style quips as they could. Yeah, no. so he made a movie about a franchise with extended lore and characters, used none of them and turned it into a joke fest. sounds like its gonna suck. I'll wait till streaming

@onwardpilgrim - Didn't he just say it's the opposite? Like he took out a lot of jokes and it's better for being more serious.

LOL I find it hilarious that almost every question about this movie is asking "Hey Zach, what do you think about the FANS huh? What do you think about all this NEGATIVITY huh!?"

Is this like talking points coordinated from Constantin Films to push back against fandom? If so, I think a lot of RE fans know Constantin Fans really doesn't give a shit about the fans.

I'm always baffled as to why filmmakers usually accepts making a movie with an established lore of characters, settings, stories, etc. and when the filming starts they sh!t on all of that and do what they want. And then surprise when fans reject the final movie.

@ganicoga - I don't get it either. Hubris?

He could make this exact movie but call it something different. Like "outbreak" or something. Otherwise it feels like they're capitalizing on establish IP and creating something that only kinda resembles it. As if I asked AI to make a resident evil movie but remove the lore

His comments sound good to me…

I feel like “fans” particularly complaining about this film following a new character and storyline rather then adapting one of the games & such is odd considering almost every RE game introduces someone new for you to play as or a new story to explore (granted , some connect to preceding ones more then others but still) so Cregger is doing the same thing but in the medium he works in which is films.

Also in regards to the humor , let’s not forget that Cregger’s previous films in Barbarian & Weapons both have had their fair share of humor which makes sense since he comes from a comedy background so it’s him adding his own sensibilities to it which any writer/director should do to make it your own but people on this site won’t understand that since most just want a copy & paste of the source material sadly.

I honestly commend Zach for cutting alot of the humor apparently due to the test screening feedback since that tends to be the opposite from what I’ve heard of certain other film screenings but oh well.

Anyway , the film looks good imo so can’t wait to see it!!.

@TheVisionary25 - yeah, his comments are actually quite good and I appreciate his perspective and the fact that he is well aware of how others could feel. He is clearly a fan of Resident Evil.

I love horror, RE, and his work, and this looks solid. I’m in. I do also prefer a happy ending in my horror movies. This sounds like it might not have that

That's how you donan interview and handle the criticism.

Some of the "it's not for you" and "Don't watch it then" dolts should take notes.

Mind you, it was BioHazard that revived the series. A game featuring no legacy characters. Cregger knows what he’s doing. Let him cook.

@GrandRegent - "A game featuring no legacy characters."

Chris Redfield appears at the end saving Ethan and Mia. There's also a DLC called "Not Another Hero" that stars Chris Redfield in RE7...so no...it still had legacy characters and a lore to follow.

@Irregular - I agree with you, but I also get his point. RE7 diverted from the direction they were going and it revitalized the franchise.

RE8 is my favorite to this day.

I’m curious if the movie will be able to do something like that for the films, and maybe we’ll get something that connects to everything else one day.

Or this movie could suck…and we’ll all piss and moan, as is our tradition User Comment Image

@JustAWaffle - Tbf this is not the first time they did this. They did it with RE4 where it was more "action" than horror to make it more akin to the genre of the RE movies (which at the time of RE4's release, they were already writing Extinction and Apocalypse had just released the year before)

They went back to horror because RE6 was a failure but at the same token they didn't shy away from the RE world, they did expand on it and it shows in the third act of RE7 and continues to RE8 (I mean Chris is now essential to the story) While they did create a new character and bioweapon, it still tied to the lore.

The movie is NOT doing that. The movie is more of what Paul WS Anderson did in 2002, except with more creative liberties and a better director. So I get everyone uses that excuse, but I wonder if people know what they are talking about if they played it, or just looked up someone else's excuse for RE7 without even thinking about it and use that as defense for the movie. Yes it's different...but it was STILL Resident Evil.

Not saying it looks bad because it does look good, but as a fan of the games moreso than Zach is obviously, do I really wanna see a movie that is just RE in name? Like the Netflix show? Like the 2002 movie again? I'll just catch on streaming honestly.

@Irregular - I think "better director" or creative head is the key word.

I'd like to see it go more headlong into the lore of the games by someone who's a competent fan. But I'm also curious to see what this side quest looks like.

So far, I've played 1, 2, 4, and 8.
Couldn't stand the game play of 5, and 6 doesn't interest me.
The remakes have been incredible overall.

I liked the first movie, since I hadn't really played the games back then, and it was just cheesy action/zombie nonsense. The rest were so bad they're good. and I haven't watched the Netflix show.

But we'll see. Probably won't see it in theaters either.

That’s the problem. Nobody wants backstory RE games. Just adapt the video games. The story is right there in front of you. Only gamers know about RE. The rest of the world has no clue what RE truly is. You need to make these movies with the thought that nobody has played these games so you need to just adapt the video games. Gamers will still see the movies too even if they played the games already.
