It's been quite a while since we had any updates on this one, but Silent Hill fans will be pleased to hear that the follow-up to 2006's underrated chiller is finally moving forward.

After a series of COVID-related delays, production is set to begin on the long-gestating "requel" next month in Germany, and the project has found its leads.

According to Deadline, Jeremy Irvine (War Horse) and Hannah Emily Anderson (Jigsaw) will star in Return to Silent Hill, which will adapt the second instalment in Konami's survival horror video game series.

"The film will follow James (Irvine), a man broken after being separated from his one true love (Anderson). When a mysterious letter calls him back to Silent Hill in search of her, he finds a once-recognizable town transformed by an unknown evil. As James descends deeper into the darkness, he encounters terrifying figures both familiar and new and begins to question his own sanity as he struggles to make sense of reality and hold on long enough to save his lost love."

The original Silent Hill movie's director Christophe Hans will return to helm this relaunch of the supernatural horror franchise, which has Victor Hadida, Molly Hassell and David Wulf on board as producers.

“Return to Silent Hill is a mythological love story about someone so deeply in love, they’re willing to go to hell to save someone,” said  Gans. “I’m delighted to have the wonderful talents of both Jeremy Irvine and Hannah Emily Anderson take us on this journey into a psychological horror world that I hope will both satisfy and surprise fans of Silent Hill.”

“Christophe and I have been working closely with our partners at Konami, as they update the video game, to also create a version of Silent Hill for the theatrical audiences of today,” added Hadida. “You will still find the iconic monsters – but there will also be new designs. We are confident that this new film and Konami’s updated game together will propel the franchise forward for years to come.”

Never saw the Silent Hill movie, but I remember liking the first several games in that series back in the day. I tend to like horror games more than horror movies though. I leave a horror movie feeling bad, versus horror games can be exciting and empowering.

@TheWalkingCuban - it's still the BEST video game to film adaptation so far.

That 06 one is one of my favorite horror movies, and Laurie Holden was so frikkin hot

By comparison Angela SUCKED, which of course Michonne spiritually took on the role so I get it. Anyway, it was more than the weird monsters, it was also the oppressive despair, and the score! Great score.

OT: I’ve been rewatching Requiem for a Dream JUST for that fantastic score.
Dudes. I’ve been sitting on a great movie for years. Brawl in cell block 99. The poster is tough Vince Vaughn so I was like, hard impolite pass. But I was bored, watched it, read that it had 90%RT, and agree with the aggregate. Really good. Slow burn then ultra violent.

I dont understand why they are making changes to the story...I get most gamers already know the twist, but again, why mess up with something that was perfect?
Anyway, I really liked the first movie.

“Return to Silent Hill is a mythological love story about someone so deeply in love, they’re willing to go to hell to save someone,”

They’re probably saying stuff like this to avoid spoiling anything significant, but it’s also already worrying they may have missed the entire point. I finally played Silent Hill 2 for the first time last year, managing to have avoided spoilers all these years, and outside of gameplay and some voice acting, that game is truly something else. Easily became one of my top 10. It holds up so well, and was so so far ahead of its time, a number of games today don’t even come close. That story gets to you, digs under your skin, and stays there months later. Really pushed and challenged the medium in so many ways games still don’t come close to today. And everything about it is enhanced so much with the atmosphere, and especially the score. Brilliant game, and one of the things The Last Of Us proved is you need longer form storytelling to really get to the heart of these kinds of stories. Silent Hill 2 being condensed to a 2-3 hour film just feels wrong.

The way this story is being phrased here, it places James in a savior’s role when, I don’t want to spoil anything but the game pretty much makes it clear right away that he’s anything but. And unraveling the ‘why’ behind that leaves you with an utter gut punch.

@DTor91 - I got to play it for the first time over Halloween as well and recently completed Silent Hill 3. It's quickly become my favourite horror series next to Resident Evil.
And to be fair even at the beginning of the game it's hinted at James not being a good guy, but even that isn't spoiling anything. Hearing that just makes you question things more like why isn't he a good guy? What did he do? Makes you more intrigued in what's going on.
I think they can fit Silent Hill 2 into a nice 2 hour plus film. The story isn't fantastically long anyway.

@DTor91 -

I think they are just avoiding spoilers and James will be discovered as not so great by the end.

I also played the game for the first time recently and have to admit that it was amazing but really didn’t like the last confrontation. I really think pyramid head should have been the final confrontation. SPOILERS…

The music and lines felt so cheesy and sounded almost like the terminator score when you fight her. It just felt like we played an entire horror game and then the final boss was something from a cheesy 80s action movie.
