An official website for Robert Eggers' upcoming Nosferatu remake is now live, and while it's still a little bare bones at the moment, it does give us a first look at the movie's title treatment along with a brief story synopsis.
"Robert Eggers’ Nosferatu is a gothic tale of obsession between a haunted young woman in 19th century Germany and the ancient Transylvanian vampire who stalks her, bringing untold horror with him."
Pretty much what we expected, then!
Eggers will likely make a few stylistic changes, but we don't anticipate the filmmaker altering the classic tale to any significant degree.
Lily Rose-Depp, Bill Skarsgard and Nicholas Hoult will play the main roles, with Emma Corrin, Aaron Taylor Johnson and regular Eggers collaborator Willem Dafoe recently joining the cast.
Interestingly, Johnson's name is first on the site's cast list, which would seem to suggest that he'll have a bigger role than we realized. Skarsgard will portray Count Orlok, and Hoult is believed to be playing Thomas Hutter (Nosferatu's take on Jonathan Harker, basically), so we have no idea which character would be considered to be of equal or greater importance. Perhaps Eggers added a new face to the story?
The Northman star Anya Taylor-Joy was originally in line for the female lead, but was forced to drop out due to a scheduling conflict. Harry Styles was also said to have read for the role of Hutter.
No release date has been announced, but production is currently underway.
