SCREAM 7: Matthew Lillard Reveals Whether He'd Be Open To Returning As SCREAM's Stu (Exclusive)

Scream star Matthew Lillard has addressed speculation that he could be in line to return to the iconic franchise as Stu following the decision to overhaul the upcoming seventh movie. Read on for details...

For horror fans, Matthew Lillard has become synonymous with the Scream franchise. These days, however, his company - Find Familiar Spirits - has just launched its second super-premium whiskey, Quest's End: Rogue, aimed at fans of fantasy and gaming (you can learn more about that here).

Founded by Lillard and screenwriter Justin Ware, with Blue Run Spirits co-founder Tim Sparapani as an advisor, the whiskey was selected, blended, and proofed by Master Blender Alé Ochoa and is accompanied by a new chapter of the original fantasy saga, Dawn of the Unbound Gods

We'll be bringing you the full interview about the second launch soon (you can also watch it now below). While we were catching up with Matthew this week after first talking to him last year about Quest's End debut, we made sure to get his thoughts on the rumours surrounding Scream 7.

The movie is being creatively overhauled after losing its two leads and there have been rumblings for a while that Stu Macher might rise from the dead. So, is the actor open to returning?

"I don’t know," he admits (via FearHQ.com) "Listen, this town in this day and age, and at my age, I’ve had a great career. I’ve come around second base and I’m heading for home. That’s a baseball analogy. We’re in stoppage time is a good football analogy in the UK. It’s something that I’m super proud of. I’m glad it’s in my life and my repertoire. I’m glad it’s part of my history and lineage."

"It would have to make a lot of sense to go back as a story and as filmmakers. I’m really thrilled to be involved with Five Nights at Freddy’s which has been a huge success and been a third franchise in my career, which I didn’t expect. I’m more excited about the upside and future of that than going back to doing something I’ve done before."

"All that said, we’ll see what happens," Lillard teased. "Nobody has called me [Laughs]. I’ll tell you that much. No one seems that interested in the return of Stu except for the fans. The fans are freaking out and love the idea, and I would argue that if you throw a TV on my head, I’ll survive. So, there you go!"

Stu was Billy Loomis' accomplice and met his maker when a TV was dropped on the killer's head, electrocuting him! While the Scream franchise isn't necessarily known for resurrecting characters, there are no doubt ways this could be made to work.

I think at this point there are two options re: Scream 7.

Option 1 is wait like 5 years, hoping that by 2029 people will have forgotten about the whole Israel/Palestine Melissa Barrera firing thing.

Option 2 is Spyglass just sells the franchise rights to another studio, because whoever Spyglass hires to make Scream 7 will not get a warm welcome from fans.

@santoanderson - they’re going to go with option 3:

Force the film to go into production cause they wanna make $$ and don’t give a [frick] about hurting the franchise. The film will underperform and the franchise will be put on a shelf for another decade before being given a reboot

You can thank their dumb ass CEO Gary Barber for all of this

Such an underrated actor. His performance near the end of SLC Punk still brings me to tears. He should’ve been cast as Cletus Cassidy Carnage.

I love Matthew Lillard and Stu is the best but this whole theory about Stu being alive is dumb as [frick]. That’s later Halloween sequels of lazy trite storytelling.

@TheLobster - Absolutely. If you're going to bring someone back don't make their death so definitive lol.

Stu would be awesome, but damn I'd love to see him play Shaggy again.

Spyglass is likely desperate enough to try to justify bring him him back if it’ll make fans forget about the fact the unceremoniously just attempted to blacklist the new main star of the franchise, stiffed the former face of the franchise, and lost their biggest draw over all.

I’m glad the movie is in development hell now.

Single Malt Whisky > Blended Whisky.

That is all.

I like him but bringing him back just to kill him it not something I wanna see. Plus Stew was never the mastermind behind the original film.

My favorite line of his in the first one was near the end of the film and Sydney asks stu what's his reason for being a killer and he simply responds "peer pressure." :D
