SCREAM Star David Arquette Teases Possible Return As Dewey And Responds To Fan Backlash (Exclusive)

Scream legend David Arquette talks about his character's shocking death in the last movie, pondering the possibility of reprising the role and sharing his take on the way fans responded to Dewey's demise.

Last year's Scream movie was met with an overwhelmingly positive response from horror fans, though there was one decision that proved particularly divisive.

We are, of course, referring to the shocking death of David Arquette's Dewey Riley, one of the franchise's most beloved characters. Ghostface brutally killing the cop certainly made it clear that no one in the movie was safe, but there's since been an outpouring of grief and rage from fans who remain horrified (no pun intended) that Dewey's story is over.

Arquette recently sat down to talk with us about his standout work in The Storied Life of A.J. Fikry. While we had this opportunity, we asked the actor how he feels now about Dewey's demise and what it's been like to see that emotional response from everyone.

"I know, it was really sweet to see the reaction of the fans. It was hard," Arquette admits in the video below. "It was a project I really loved being part of. They went off to do number six and I was like, ‘Oh, okay…’ [Laughs] It’s hard. It’s something that’s really close to my heart, but I love how they handled it."

"I think my character had a really good role in Scream 5 and had a lot to do. That was really nice. We’ll see..."

"We'll see"? That prompted us to ask the actor if he thinks a surprise resurrection could be a possibility for Dewey down the line and he's discounting nothing. "Yeah! [Laughs] Who knows, anything is possible. I mean, how many movies have Jason or Mike Myers been in? Not that Dewey’s a killer, but there is a coming-back-to-life element within these horror films."

It would be great to see it happen, and as far-fetched as it might seem on the surface, it's not as if stranger things haven't happened in these Scream movies!

The next instalment is currently being shot, and there's always a chance David is playing coy here. If nothing else, flashbacks or a dream sequence have to be a possibility, though only time will tell on that front. The new filmmakers, Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, are very secretive about their plans, so we're unlikely to find out more until we're sat down in theaters.

Would you like to see more Dewey in Scream 6 and beyond?

Love this franchise. Dewey had a lot to do in Scream 5 and went out on a high note. His death didn't both me at all.

I thought his death scene was intense the only thing that bothered me was who killed him because the height didn't match up but maybe those leaks are true 🤔?

Eh… I think the whole height thing is par for the course with these movies. There are always stunt men in the costumes. I think the only scene Jack Quaid wore the outfit in was the one where they recreate the Randy “behind you” scene from the first one (also the only scene Skeet Ulrich wore the costume in).

My only real complaints about Pt. 5 was bringing Billy back and Sam the main character. Didn’t love her.

Considering Scream is a commentary of other slashers, he could come back so many different ways. I’m hoping for reincarnation via cult

Considering that Scream 2022 was following the layout of the Force Awakens, it was pretty evident he was going to die. Although it’s hard to see a character that Wes and Kevin had gone such lengths to keep alive for so long.

I really didn't like 5. Weird Old Billy visions, main actress was super wooden and was completely outshined by her sister in the film, cliche and cheesy ending, new characters got barely any screen time and were killed off for the most part while returning characters either acted like idiots (Dewey) or were killed off with little respect or thought (Judy).

Here's how I would have setup the franchise instead. (Apologies if it's long and you don't care feel free to skip it.)

I still think they should have had Gale die in 5, that would have setup disheveled drunk Dewey a lot better than... "Oh they just got divorced" and they should have set it somewhere else inspired by the events of 4 where videos have began resurfacing after they were leaked/reuploaded however some of these are also videos from 3. Gale goes in and is the protagonist for the most part investigating this new copycat but Dewey (still a Sheriff) can't leave his job.

She's going around investigating multiple murders like you do in a slasher movie. Which eventually puts together that the killer is the one that leaked the videos but similar to the movie it's multiple killers and it is actually a cult like fanbase that worships Stu who surprise is alive and in prison. (Get rid of the weird ghost Billy bs) The movie would end with Gale's death as she watches a monitor filled with Ghostface masks appear in video calls on the screen.

Not the greatest but it would setup this sequel to be the big return of a bunch of characters with Dewey who is actually hardened and competent but drinking himself to death because of Gale's death. He teams up with Sydney who having a family now is basically like Lori Strode from the new Halloween she's paranoid, scared, and angry. This movie would essentially be aliens to alien. A lot of killers and a lot of kills but the protagonists taking out a lot of them. You'd have returning characters and new characters come in that are linked to the other movies similar to the new cast as well as characters like Kirby and Judy. We'd have scenes where Stu is essentially Hannibal Lector talking to Dewy and Syd in prison although ultimately he just gives insight and isn't involved in the new cult but is so very pleased his and Billy's legacy lives on. Dewey would eventually die in this one, not because he was stupid and walked up on the killer but because he was swarmed after taking some out. Syd who's getting increasingly pissed off especially now that another original has been killed due to this cult decides that she, Kirby, Judy, and the other targets of the cult related to other characters hold up in the high school, the same school from the first film. Yadadada people die both killers and survivors leading to the leader of the cult, Cotton's bastard child who's pissed off that this story has robbed him of his father. Where this would be different is that yeah they would fight, Syd would get the upper hand and is about to kill him so pissed off at this kid for being the cause of her friends death but she stops and says enough people have died and she actually talks him down. No jump scare attacks no she turns away and he trys to kill her. Nope Syd beats Ghostface once and for all by ending it. This kid (mid 20s) goes to jail, but not before what he set into motion already takes place. Stu is broken out of prison...
