A new adaptation of one of Stephen King's most popular novels, Salem's Lot, is in development at New Line, and we're hearing that Jake Gyllenhaal has been offered the lead.

The Illuminerdi reports that a "formal offer" has gone out to the Spider-Man: Far From Home actor to play troubled writer turned vampire-hunter Ben Mears. Apparently, Christoph Waltz (Django Unchained) is the studio's "top choice" to play Richard Straker, though it's not currently known if he's been approached.

Recent IT adaptation writer Gary Dauberman (Annabelle Comes Home) has signed on to direct, and he will also pen the screenplay. Aquaman director James Wan will produce this big-screen take on the novel, along with Roy Lee and Mark Wolper.

Salem's Lot tells the story of a writer named Ben Mears who returns to his childhood town of Jerusalem's Lot only to find himself drawn to an old house that traumatized him as a child. The Marsten House is an evil place, and an evil place attracts evil men. Unfortunately for Ben and the rest of the town, this time the evil men in question are powerful vampire Kurt Barlow and his devious familiar Richard Straker.

The book was previously adapted as a 1979 miniseries from The Texas Chainsaw Massacre director Tobe Hooper, featuring a scene with child-vampire scratching at the window which terrified an entire generation. There was also a far less successful 2004 version starring Rob Lowe.

Would be an awesome get. I was a big fan of Hooper’s movie and the miniseries had its charm.

I think Waltz would be a better fit for Barlow, unless they can snag Nikolaj.

Off topic: Get ready Snyderbros! Your boy is about to take a crap all over Norse mythology.

This actually might be a bit more up his alley, but I'm sure it'll still be overlong, meandering, and self-serious to the point of parody.

@Feralwookiee - If it keeps him busy and away from complaining about what DC didn't let him do, then ill support it.

Won't watch it but I will support it

That was the scariest novel I ever read. I read about 100 pages the first day, about 100 the second day, and at the beginning of the third day is when I realized that there were vampires involved, and I could NOT put that book down after that until I finished
it.

And I have been waiting for a theatrical version ever since. I wouldn't mind a two-parter (like "IT") and or even a three hour film.

Looking forward to this.

This was the first thing I ever watched to give me nightmares. Think it was early 80's and is the movie that really got me in to horror. Absolute classic and demands so much respect. The Rob Lowe remake wasn't terrible but not a patch on the original. If this isn't three hours long then please, don't bother. I do like Jake though. Probably in the top 5 of actors around at the moment.

@MarvelousMarty - Yes, a 3 hour film would be great.

At this rate, they're gonna run out of King books to adept and have to remakes of remakes.

@bkmeijer - LOL. And after they have remade the remakes, they can always go the opposite direction of Disney and made each one into an animation! I'm joking (I don't know how bad and/or good that could be).
