Bucharest, Romania. The not-too-distant future, but an entirely different city. The human population is dwindling. The vampire population, meanwhile, is exploding. Having emerged from the shadows a decade earlier, vampires now walk openly amongst the human population, as a precarious peace exists between the two. A peace made possible by the introduction of a synthetic blood substitute, dispensed by the Romanian government, making traditional vampire feeding, and preying on humans, no longer necessary. But even so, it's not a peace that everyone is entirely comfortable with...
Detective Derricks, an American working for the local police, is investigating a gruesome murder scene. Three vampires and one human, a black market human blood dealer, were viciously attacked ... seemingly mauled by some kind of wild animal. But these deaths are just the latest in a string of such killings so Derricks pays a visit to the head of the Vampire Crimes Division, Constantin Kovacs, to make a radical request – to free Johnny Harker and his Vampirdzhiya, or 'Vampire Hunters', from prison so that they can track down whoever, or whatever, is killing both humans and vampires alike and threatening the delicate truce between the two in the process.
With Harker and his team backing him up, as well as a fresh-faced recruit from the Vampire Crimes Division, Derricks ventures into the dark underbelly of Bucharest, deep into Vampire territory to try to unearth the truth. Descending into an ancient coven, Derricks meets Anghel, a centuries-old vampire who believes a virus has been spreading throughout the vampire population, leading to a mutation, or devolution of the vampire gene, creating a subspecies of mindless, man-sized vampire bats.
Anghel believes his son, Aleksandr, has fallen into their ranks so he assigns his remaining son, Nikolai, and his elite team of Vinatorii Umane, or 'Human Hunters', vampires assembled for the sole purpose of hunting down Harker's squad, to work alongside Derricks and the very humans they were trained to kill. Only together do they stand a chance of surviving and getting to the bottom of the mystery.
A journey below the city, and into the sewers, searching for both Aleksandr and the bats' lair, leads to the discovery that there are many hundreds of these giant vampire bats beneath the city, coming out at night to prey on the denizens of Bucharest. Derricks and his dozen soldiers must not only eliminate the vampire bat threat but uncover the secret of their origin – a conspiracy that threatens to rock the nation to its core and destabilize the peace between human and vampire forever.
Along the way, friendships will become strained, allegiances will be divided, and a forbidden romance will ultimately put forth the question of what it truly means to be human. Combining the thrills of BLADE with the human drama of TRUE BLOOD and TWILIGHT, “VAMPYRE NATION” is a frightening tale of science fiction and horror that will question the way you think.
