If David Gordon Green's 2018 Halloween revival proved anything, it's that you can't keep a good masked maniac down. Leatherface is set to follow Michael Myers' lead by returning to stalk and dismember a whole new generation of victims in Legendary's Texas Chainsaw Massacre, and we have a first look at some promo stills courtesy of EW.
The images give us an obscured glimpse of the power tool-wielding killer (Mark Burnham, replacing the late Gunnar Hansen) along with his fresh batch of potential victims, played by Sarah Yarkin, Elsie Fisher, Nell Hudson, and Jacob Latimore.
"It's basically the same character, who is still alive," says producer Fede Álvarez of the hulking brute. "Our take on it was this guy probably disappeared after everything he's done. You know, how do you catch a guy who has a mask? Once he removes the mask and runs away, it's very easy for him to hide somewhere. This story will pick it up many, many years after the original story. He's been in hiding for a long, long time, trying to be a good person. These people arriving in this town are going to awaken the giant."
Though this movie is described as a direct sequel to Tobe Hooper's '70s classic, it won't necessarily ignore the events of the other TCM entries that followed.
"When I say 'direct sequel' I wouldn't say it skips everything," Álvarez explains. "When movies do that, sometimes it feels a bit disrespectful to all the other films. Some people love Texas Chainsaw 2. I love a lot of things about that movie — it's so wacky and of its time. But the rest is such a mess canon-wise. I think it's up to you to decide when and how the events of the other movies happen."
Texas Chainsaw Massacre is set to premiere on Netflix on February 18. Check out the images below, and let us know what you think.
