It looks like Tim Burton will be directing a stop motion animated version of The Addams Family. His version will be based on Charles Addams' original ghoulish cartoon drawings.
The new animated version will be, of course, in 3D and is unrelated to the 60's TV show or the two previous live action movies from the 90's. The original illustrations appeared in
The New Yorker as single panel cartoons between 1938 and 1988. The tone of those was much darker and had a biting wit to them.
Burton is no rookie when it comes to stop motion. He has been involved as either a writer, director or producer in
The Nightmare Before Christmas, Corpse Bride and his 1984 short
Frankenweenie. Burton is still in talks with Disney to make a full feature of the short which was about a boy who reanimates his dead dog.
The Addams Family will also be seen as a Broadway musical opening this spring starring Nathan Lane and Bebe Neuwirth.
