It was announced last year that CBS All Access would air a 9-episode miniseries adaptation of Stephen King's masterful post-apocalyptic horror novel The Stand, and now we finally have an official premiere date.

It was announced today that The Stand will premiere on CBS All Access on December 17, with the episodes airing on a weekly basis.

The series stars James Marsden as principal protagonist Stu Redman, Amber Heard as the conflicted Nadine Cross, Jovan Adepo as Larry Underwood, Heather Graham as Rita Blakemoor, Owen Teague as Harold Lauder, Odessa Young as Frannie Goldsmith, Whoopi Goldberg as Mother Abagail, and Alexander Skarsgård as the demonic Randall Flagg.

For those unfamiliar with King's novel, The Stand deals with a global pandemic (yes, it's a scarily prescient tale) known as "Captain Tripps" which wipes out 99% of the world's population. The survivors are immune to the disease, but are ultimately forced to fight each other as some are drawn to a the light (Abagail), and others to darkness (Flagg).

New Mutants director Josh Boone, who was the driving force behind all previous attempts to adapt the book, will direct, write, and produce the upcoming series.

Check out the new poster below along with some recently released stills, and keep an eye out for the first trailer.

FORCE FOR GOOD Whoopi Goldberg as Mother Abagail the 108yearold whose followers hold fast to their humanity.

Jovan Adepo as Larry Underwood and Heather Graham as Rita Blakemoor.

Owen Teague as Harold Lauder.

ANGELS AND DEVILS Alexander Skarsgard as demonic Randall Flagg.

Alexander Skarsgrd as Randall Flagg and Nat Wolff as Lloyd Henreid.

Odessa Young as expectant mother Frannie Goldsmith.

“He was the other man, the other face, the hardcase, the dark man, the Walkin Dude, and his rundown bootheels clocked along the perfumed ways of the summer night.”

― Stephen King, Randall Flagg.

@GothamSon - he looks like he did in the original and yet, while the movie sucked, I LOVED Flagg's look in "The Dark Tower" adaption.

He looked about as sinister as I imagined the Man in Black to be.

@Blergh - Yeah I wished they gave him the creepy monks's cowl from the books. And for all the bad scenes in that movie, Elba's gun-slinging was pretty awesome.

I like a lot of the talent attached to this. I'm so glad they decided to do this as a miniseries. Two movies just wasn't going to cut it. Hell, tbh, a 9 parter might not either, but It gives me more hope.

@inkniron - one of the longest reads I ever had and yet one of the most rewarding ones as well

@Blergh - It is. It's been about 20 yrs since I read it. I'm glad I did it when I did. I love to immerse myself in books and I don't have the time to do that with such large books anymore.

That pomp on Flagg seems a bit much. But ok.

The opening for the original mini series with "Don't Fear The Reaper" playing was awesome, they should do something similar with "Among The Living" by Anthrax playing. (Among The Living is about the Stand)

It was due for a remake. Hope it's as good as IT Chapter One.

I flip flop between this and It as my favorite King book. Both took me a long time to read but loved ever second spending what ever free time I had to read. The mini-series had it's moments but I'm ready for a new take. I hope it this turns out great.

Felt like this was never coming out. Not sure I’ll get CBS All Access though, so I guess I’ll just keep waiting

I still like the last miniseries better. This will only be a copy.

The book, specially the uncut edition, was amazing, one of my favorite if not my favorite book of all time. We'll see how this adaptation does.

Hopefully they can adjust the ending to make it a little more satisfying than the book. Otherwise, excellent story that deserves a long form adaptation.

Since Flagg’s (aka Walter; aka The Man in Black; aka The Walkin’ Dude) sole purpose actually is to help The Crimson King bring down The Dark Tower in different ways, one of which is by destabilizing the many worlds of which the tower is at the center, I am really really hoping that we get a scene or glimpse from King’s book The Dark Tower IV: Wizard and Glass, where The Gunslinger Roland Deschain and his Ka-Tet of gunslingers, while on their journey to reach the tower walk through the weakened barrier (referred to as a ‘Thinney’) between his world (called Mid-World where the tower is located) and the world where The Stand takes place (one of the many ‘worlds’ or versions of Earth) and come across the destruction that Flagg and the Captain Tripps Super Flu caused there. Especially the scene where they see the graffitti on the highway sign that says ‘All Hail The Crimson King’ with the Crimson King’s signet. It would be the pentultimate easter egg EVER in a proper series or film for The Stand. I have to say that you have to read The Stand before reading all 7 of The Dark Tower magnus opus books - because you realize that The Stand book is really a side story that gives gravity to The Dark Tower books, lends weight to why Roland needs to reach the tower and beat The Crimson King at the base of the tower.
