US Review: "Jordan Peele Seriously Has A Knack For This Genre; It Makes You Think Hard"

If you like creepy, intense, and dark humor qualities in your movies... then take a look at Us. Simply put, Jordan Peele's second big screen showcasing has all of those aspects and more.

Have you ever wondered if somewhere out there, you just may have a doppelganger? Well, if you see Us, those thoughts and wonders will definitely crank up a notch.

Us is about a young family who goes on a beach vacation to Santa Cruz. However, things get unnerving and bizarre when another family stands outside their house one night. When they take a closer look, they realize it's not just any group of people. It's identical versions of themselves. Also, if you've seen the trailers, you would know these clones didn't come over for a game of Monopoly. They're here to cause some damage, and it's a matter of life and death for this family.

Lupita Nyong'o is the main star in this film, along with Winston Duke. Nyong'o plays the mother, who is courageous and tough as nails. Her performance is as both the mother, and the clone is amazing in every way. Nyong'o knows what it takes to be creepy and action packed, and she passes with flying colors. Her husband played by Winston Duke is the average dad, who provides some comic relief in a talented fashion. Even the two kids do well being scared out of their minds, and scary into our minds.

Us definitely falls into the psychological horror film category. It makes you think hard, but also become very leery on what the next scene could possibly be. That's basically what makes it so entertaining. Unpredictability in a film could either be really good or really bad, but Us hits it out of the park on that note. However, it's not perfect. No movie is. Personally, I felt Us dragged a bit in the middle. It was to the point where I just wanted the current scenery to wrap up, and give me something new. Although, it adjusts itself halfway through, so it grabbed my attention again until the credits rolled.

Overall, it's an enjoyable but intense horror flick. There's some laughs, so Us doesn't take itself too seriously. However, Jordan Peele seriously has a knack for this genre. If I'm Marvel, I would keep his number on speed dial for any future projects.

Peele knows damn well how to do horror, and Nyong'o has proved her Oscar worthy talent.
However, I felt like "Us" had no clear meaning. Its writer/director didn't really know where to go with the story.

@OuzoPowerMan - You'd probably have to Google a Jordan Peele interview, to find out exactly what deeper meaning and commentary, that he was trying to express with "Us". But the movie succeeds on the basic entertainment level of awesome performances, suspense, horror, and comedy.

@WAKANDABATMANFOREVER - Yeah, I'm not really a fan of having to watch interviews to understand what the directors want to express (same thing happened to me last year when I watched Kubrick's "Space Odyssey"). But I get your point.
Also, are you saying it's a great film because it's very simple at doing this basic entertainment? Because I think it's kind of unfair to really good horror movies, like "Hereditary", to give this film a 10/10 (Pardon me if I sound annoying. :P).

Jordan Peele is the next Christopher Nolan/Spike Lee/Alfred Hitchcock. 👏

This movie definitely leaves some things to the imagination and not everything is completely explained but it did provide a lot of symbolism. I actually want to watch it again to see what I missed.

I think the themes and symbolism in the film were really strong and Lupita Nyong'o gives an awesome performance. But the story loses its luster as it unfolds. The middle parts where the family is trying to escape town challenges ones suspension of disbelief. Some of the dialogue is labored as if they are trying to inject humor in situations that make the jokes awkward. The movie is beautifully shot and it evokes a balanced amount of creep and beauty. The mythology that Peele sets up is forced and therefore creates a premise riddled with plot holes, even while at the same time the imagery it creates captures perfectly the main theme that the film is trying to impress on the audience. Overall a good follow up to Get Out with strong acting from the lead, a somewhat weak second act and mildly problematic story. Overall, out of ten points I give it...
