Director Shane Black & Don Cheadle Discuss “Techno-Thriller” Route For IRON MAN 3

Conducted during San Diego Comic-Con, Wired has just posted a descent video of their exclusive chat with Iron Man 3 director Shane Black and James “Rhodey” Rhodes actor Don Cheadle. Promising a gritty, intense techno-thriller, check out all of what Black & Cheadle had to say.

“Shane is obviously bringing his own flare to it,” says Don Cheadle. “And the script that he and Drew Pearce wrote is very very different, but it still feels like...some things have to be paid off in the same way.” “That's right,” Black agreed. “In fact I owe sort of a debt to [Jon] Favreau I have to carry on what he started without violating it — at the same time bringing sort of my own enhancement if I can.”

Cheadle adds that, “[Iron Man 3] feels a little more scarily possible,” while Black continues: “We had kind of a conundrum in that The Avengers opens up this huge skyhole full of inter-dimensional aliens, and you kind of look back and [think], ’Well, what do you do after that?’ Except go back to a sort of more gritty, intense kind of techno-thriller root. You just go in and you sort of wrestle...you gotta of jerk things around a bit, and mix it up so that there's still more story to tell. And the way you do that is treat it like the first two [movies] were part of an ongoing story that hasn't finished yet. The journeys are all mythic in a way we recognize from a lot of years...mythic superhero stories. Today's world is so complicated that the simplicity of myth has come back around the desire, or need for people to feel and see that that's unprecedented; given how just confusing the world is right now.”

Marvel Studios’ “Iron Man 3” pits brash-but-brilliant industrialist Tony Stark/Iron Man against an enemy whose reach knows no bounds. When Stark finds his personal world destroyed at his enemy’s hands, he embarks on a harrowing quest to find those responsible. This journey, at every turn, will test his mettle. With his back against the wall, Stark is left to survive by his own devices, relying on his ingenuity and instincts to protect those closest to him. As he fights his way back, Stark discovers the answer to the question that has secretly haunted him: does the man make the suit or does the suit make the man? Starring Robert Downey Jr., Gwyneth Paltrow, Don Cheadle, Guy Pearce, Rebecca Hall, Stephanie Szostak, James Badge Dale with Jon Favreau and Ben Kingsley, “Iron Man 3” is directed by Shane Black from a screenplay by Drew Pearce & Shane Black and is based on Marvel’s iconic Super Hero Iron Man, who first appeared on the pages of “Tales of Suspense” (#39) in 1963 and had his solo comic book debut with “The Invincible Iron Man” (#1) in May of 1968. “Iron Man 3” is presented by Marvel Studios in association with Paramount Pictures & DMG Entertainment. Marvel Studios’ President Kevin Feige is producing & Jon Favreau, Louis D’Esposito, Stephen Broussard, Victoria Alonso, Alan Fine, Charles Newirth, Stan Lee & Dan Mintz are executive producers. The film hits May 3, 2013, & is distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures.

Iron Man 3 has a more serious tone. We see Tony Stark becoming more mature since the events of The Avengers.

I'm just waiting to see what Mandarin's rings can do......but so far, this definitely sounds like the best of the trilogy. Only time well tell......

FETTASTIC

I think Jamie Foxx would've been a better War Machine than Cheadle and Howard, but Cheadle was more convincing in that role than Howard IMO.

I'm sorry, but why is it so damn necessary that they do Demon in a Bottle? I think 2 pretty much WAS their version of Demon in a Bottle. This isn't like the comics. We get one movie every couple years. There's but so much screen time you get to tell Iron Man stories. Why do that twice? Whether or not you liked IM 2 is irrelevant to that point. The point is, we've seen Tony descend into excess and come back from it. That's my take nayways.

Based on what I've seen from the Lethal Weapon movies (and the first IM3 trailer), I trust Shane. This movie will kick ass.

Is it just me or Cheadle looks old and shrinking?
I know he is a great actor but i prefer Foxx as Rhodes

And one of the usual suspects arrives.
in response, I would say something concerning WB/DC's box office track record, but it speaks for itself.

Until the mean time, lets enjoy Phase 2 and Phase 3 of the critically acclaimed fourth highest grossing movie franchise of all time.

I totally respect how this guy considers what Favreau laid down while forging a new tone for Iron Man- at the same time, mindful of theAvengers scope and going into a smaller Iron Man story on the heels of it. I'm looking forward to this.

Cereal for everyone.
