BARBIE Director On Whether She Was Ever Concerned About Riling Up Snyder Cut Fans With JUSTICE LEAGUE Joke

Barbie is now playing in theaters and, as things stand, all signs point to it being the biggest movie of 2023. Reviews have been overwhelmingly positive, but there's one joke which has proven to be predictably divisive.

Be warned as we are going to be getting into minor spoiler territory from this point on!

In the later stages of the movie, toxic masculinity infects Barbieland and the Kens start taking over. That results in the Barbies being brainwashed to serve their horse-loving men, prompting Stereotypical Barbie (Margot Robbie) to step up and save the day.

However, it's around this point Barbie delivers a joke aimed squarely at Zack Snyder's Justice League

When "Writer Barbie," played by Alexandra Shipp, regains her senses, she describes the time she spent brainwashed as follows: "It's like I've been in a dream where I was really invested in the Zack Snyder Cut of Justice League." It's a moment which received a lot of laughs in our screening, but was director Greta Gerwig ever worried about antagonising an incredibly passionate fanbase?

"I didn't even really realize that," she confessed in an interview with ComicBook.com (via Toonado.com) when they pointed out how vocal the SnyderVerse faithful are. "I didn't even...because I don't have a dog in this fight, I didn't even really know, I knew it was a thing. I don't know the contours of all the ins and outs. But it's the kind of thing that I vaguely know."

"But I think that was the thing, that it was like if [Writer Barbie] had a vague knowledge of, and then all of a sudden in a certain state, it really meant a lot to her, and then it went away."

Anyone who's legitimately offended by this gag probably needs to get out more, especially as the Snyder Cut finally saw the light of day back in 2021 when it debuted on HBO Max. Ultimately, this is a funny moment in a hilarious movie and one that works well in the context of what's going on in Barbieland.

Barbie is now playing in theaters, while Zack Snyder's Justice League remains available on Max, Digital, and Blu-ray.

Snyder Fans have been a punchline for quite some time. Not surprised Barbie ridiculed them.

@KingLeonidas - Fairly and unfairly so.

Fairly. Definitely fairly.

@DrReedRichards - Depends. I've interacted with cool Snyder fans (I like to think of myself a fan too) who while they'd like to see more, they aren't attacking anyone who feels differently who simply aren't a fan of Snyder's films.. Don't get me wrong, I know those who do (especially on twitter) and cringe out when they go over the top.

@Highflyer -

I've honestly yet to encounter a single decent Snyder fan, let alone an unironocally "cooL" one, and that lies solely on their (= your? idk) refusal to admit that the majority of support for his DCEU turds stems solely from the fac that he was the most vocal anti-MCU alternative.

Before you, or any Snyder fan can have the dignity and honesty to admit as much, I'm sorry to say that we can't converse. Once you do, I'd be more than happy to discuss.

@DrReedRichards - From what I can remember, the Snyder DC discourse came mainly within the "DC comminity itself". There are certainly those who claim whoever doesn't like Snyder's films only want the "MCU formula". Hell, nowadays, it's not even Snyder fans vs MCU, but rather Snyder fans vs "real DC fans" or James Gunn fans. Again, I agree that there opposition against the MCU and Snyder was seen as the face of that.

@Highflyer -

You are saying things that are not wrong, but you continue to ommit their preleecentage, ie how representative they are of Snyder fans as a whole.

Generalizing stereotypes might be disrespectful to individuals, but for groups they're necessary.
