Olivia Colman Is An A-List Oscar And Emmy-Winner That Absolutely Loves Marvel Films

These days, it's all too easy to find interviews where directors and actors are trashing the MCU and superhero movies in general so this latest bit of pleasantry from Olivia Colman is rather refreshing.

Who would have thought that an Academy Award and 2x Emmy-winning actress would absolutely love the MCU and Marvel movies but that's a definite reality that exists in the form of Oliva Colman (The Favourite, The Crown, Heartstopper).

Given the mixed reviews and tepid box office returns on several recent Marvel films, it's become somewhat fashionable of late to speak out against the once-dominant powerhouse.

The 3x Golden Globe winner recently stated, "I love Marvel, not ashamed to say it. I think there's room in the world for all things and all genres...I love Marvel and I love the fact that they pay so much [laughs]. I was very excited to be in a Marvel project...When a Marvel film comes out, I [frick]ing love it.

The Marvel talk starts at the 25:50 mark in the video below.

It's worth noting that Colman recently had a supporting role in the Disney+ Marvel series, Secret Invasion.

However, starring in a Marvel film doesn't exactly mean you're guaranteed to sing its praises. Case in point, both Robert Downey Jr. and Gwyneth Paltrow, stars of Iron Man- which kicked off the MCU, have recently had less than stellar things to say about Marvel and superhero films.

Harry Potter actress Miriam Margolyes also recently revealed her disdain for Marvel films, as did Twilight and Spencer star Kristen Stewart and Stranger Things' Finn Wolfhard. They join a list of superhero film detractors that already includes Jodie Foster, Jennifer Aniston, Martin Scorsese, Alejandro González Iñárritu, Ridley Scott, and more.

Despite some recent storms in the form of Jonathan Majors' firing and the box office misfires of Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania and The Marvels, things are looking up as Deadpool & Wolverine is the next MCU film set to hit theaters on July 26, 2024. Starring Ryan Reynolds' Wade Wilson and featuring the return of Hugh Jackman's Wolverine, that film figures to be a surefire, billion-dollar hit.

Phase 5 of the MCU then closes out with Captain America: Brave New World on February 14, 2025, and Thunderbolts on May 2, 2025.

Phase 6 then looks to close out The Multiverse Saga with The Fantastic Four on July 25, 2025, Blade on November 7, 2025, Avengers 5 on May 1, 2026, and Avengers: Secret Wars on May 7, 2027.

That's definitely an incredibly strong lineup of films over the next three years that wil likely restore the MCU to the pinnacle of the box office pantheon.

Nah, wouldn't say "terminally"; just enough to see through certain behaviours.

Case in point...

@AnthonyVonGeek - Brown for first course, white for pudding. Brown is savoury, white's the treat.

Wouldn't mind seeing her return for any other future project if she's up for it. For some reason I think she'd fit into Blade's movie.

@bkmeijer1 - Putting aside any issues with the Super Skrull stuff feel she could pop up anywhere well with Earth bound stuff and would make total sense having a significant supporting role with Blade or anything that could tie into MI:13, Excalibur or anything else where the UK or British characters are involved in the narrative. Would be nice if her cropping up again leads to references to past and/or modern day versions of Union Jack and Spitfire too down the road.

@Apophis71 - was thinking something like that too. Was already kinda surprised she wasn't part of MI13 already. And with her name being Falsworth, I can imagine some ties to Union Jack as well

When did RDJ ever say anything bad about marvel? I've only heard him praise Marvel and his experience making the films
bkmeijer1
bkmeijer1 - 4/7/2024, 9:32 AM
@Izaizaiza - only indirectly I believe, and that's even reading into things. He thanked Nolan for giving him the chance to star in Oppenheimer and resurrect his dwindling credibility.

I don't think that really meant the MCU dwindled his credibility though, but moreso the projects like Dolittle he did after.
Izaizaiza
Izaizaiza - 4/7/2024, 9:43 AM
@bkmeijer1 - Yeah, the main thing I've heard him say is that Nolan didn't let him use any of the techniques he'd come to rely upon, so it pushed him into new territory, and forced him to be a better actor
bkmeijer1
bkmeijer1 - 4/7/2024, 10:08 AM
@Izaizaiza - either way, it's not really a dig at Marvel at all. It's just different from what he's known for until a few years back.

@Izaizaiza - Since they didn't provide a link you can assume context means everything and the actual context doesn't fit whatever point this article is trying to get across do they omitted the details. Gwenyth doesn't even remember she was in a Spiderman film.

Sucks that she was in the worst marvel project, nut she was one of the only good things about it tbh. I hope she comes back.

@Polaris - honestly , I’m probably in the minority but I enjoyed Secret Invasion more then not (that finale was weak).

However I do agree that she was one of the best parts of it alongside the Fury-Talos dynamic and Gravik (who i personally liked).

@TheVisionary25 - I was mostly bored throughout and then the Rhodey twist (or what they tried to imply, which I hope they reconsider) soured the whole thing for me. I liked the cast but that's about it.

@mountainman - Seen her express her love of Marvel and desire to be part of it LONG before they were casting for Secret Invasion on shows like Graham Norton's so...

...get your point, actors can oft fake love when it is in their self interests to do so, but she has always tended to come across open and honest about such things and past comments before Secret Invasion was being planned track with her being honest here too...

...if anything think this is more a Whoopi Goldberg with Star Trek sittuation where she got the job after already expressing a desire to be part of and love for Marvel putting her under consideration rather than the other way around and faking it.
