AQUAMAN And WATCHMEN Star Yahya Abdul-Mateen II Rumored To Be In Talks For WONDER MAN Lead Role

Marvel Studios is on the hunt for its Wonder Man, and a new report claims that Aquaman and Watchmen star Yahya Abdul-Mateen II is now "in talks" to play the MCU's Simon Williams. Read on for details...

Marvel Studios have made a lot of big announcements this year, though it's clear a lot of upcoming projects have yet to be confirmed. We still don't have a full slate of Disney+ TV shows and Special Presentations for 2025 and 2026, and Wonder Man is believed to be among those on the way.

There's been a lot of chatter surrounding Simon Williams' MCU debut, and Screen Geek has now shared some very interesting details from a supposed casting grid.

The Disney+ series (assuming it's not a one-off Special) is reportedly looking to cast three leads, including the title hero, an unnamed female lead, and Simon's manager. However, the site claims that Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom and Watchmen star Yahya Abdul-Mateen II is currently "in talks" to play Wonder Man himself.

That would be an awesome bit of casting if true, and the site does have a solid track record.

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings director Destin Daniel Cretton is reportedly working on Wonder Man with writer Andrew Guest. His credits include hit TV shows like Brooklyn Nine-Nine30 Rock, and Community, and Guest is set to serve as Head Writer (a.k.a. showrunner) for Wonder Man. Cretton will executive produce and likely direct a few episodes.

Wonder Man made his Marvel Comics debut in the pages of Avengers #9 in 1964. Initially a villain, he was later retconned and became a hero (and an Avenger) in the 1970s. His brother is the Grim Reaper, while it was his brainwaves that were used by Ultron as a basis for The Vision (giving them something of a brotherly relationship as well).

Later, Simon Williams assembled alongside the West Coast Avengers and ultimately became a successful actor and stuntman. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 very nearly included a nod to the character's Hollywood background with Nathan Fillion lending his face to some movie posters that didn't make the final cut.

How would you feel about Abdul-Mateen II playing the MCU's Wonder Man?

Why not Power man?
Dude looks like he could be a great Luke Cage

@OptimusCrime - meh... he's a great actor and all, but I don't think he's big enough to play Luke cage and I dont see him putting on THAT much weight.

Actors are very reticent to bulk up like that, as it starts to limit the roles that they're eligible for.

Like the guy that plays Reacher, Alan Ritchson, was saying that he's one of those guys who struggles to keep muscle off and hover around the 210 range so he doesn't miss out on roles.

BTW, I'm not saying he's not in phenomenal shape or anything, as the dude is shredded, but he just doesn't have the size for Luke Cage IMO.

@OptimusCrime - since Cox made the jump and more or less canonized the Dedenders saga, I'd really rather they kept the actors as much as possible.

@Demigods - never know actor playing Hercules is smaller than thor

@OptimusCrime - doesn’t marvel have Luke cage if they decide go actor who’s played Luke cage in Netflix series
Demigods
Demigods - 10/19/2022, 11:24 AM
@dragon316 - to be fair, I have a MAJOR issue with the guy they picked to play Hercules too though.

I think that's SUCH a disservice to the fans. He's a great actor and I dont have any problems him, but the guy is something like 5'10" or something! And he's facing off against Hemsworth, who's 6'4"?!?!

Look, if he REALLY bulks up and they use movie magic to increase his height to put him on par with Hemsworth for height and muscle, THEN I'll be cool with it. But the guy needs another 6 inches of height and about 100 pounds of lean muscle to sell it as Hercules.

Unless they use some movie magic, I think that casting decision is complete BS.

@TheAstoundingMan -

Say you make him black. Fine...

All he will do the entire film is bitch about about Hollywood marginalizes POCs and rant about #whiteoscars. Wonder Man is supposed to be a fun loving actor...not a moping activist. Wait... That IS the Hollywood actor of 2022!

Carry on my wayward son... 😂😂😂

@JackRussoff3 - the sales of Marvel comics are not going to change the casting choice of Marvel studios was my point. You can not read the books till the end of time but it will not change who the cast in the films

I think he could actually be a fun manager, but I might just be saying that because I want Nathan Fillion as Wonder Man. Either works I guess though

I actually like this. Not the choice I was thinking of but I wouldn't mind at all. Personally think he's being wasted as Black Manta.
