THUNDERBOLTS Movie Officially In Development At Marvel Studios With Jake Schreier Set To Direct

Confirming rumors that have been doing the rounds for over a year now, we have word that a Thunderbolts movie is officially in the works at Marvel Studios with Jake Schreier on board to direct...

It's become increasingly obvious that Marvel Studios has been planning some sort of Thunderbolts (or something similar) project for a while, and Deadline has now confirmed that a movie based on the supervillain/antihero team is officially in development.

Jake Schreier (Robot and Frank, Dave) is set to direct, with Black Widow scribe Eric Pearson penning the script. Plot details are few and far between, but the movie is said to revolve "around a group of supervillains (or at least characters who have played bad guys at one point in MCU) who go on missions for the government."

In the comics, the Thunderbolts were originally introduced as a new superhero team who stepped in when the Avengers were declared dead after the events of Onslaught, but it was soon revealed that they were actually the Masters of Evil in disguise. Ultimately, most members of the team reformed for real, and did their best to become a force for good.

We don't know which characters will make up the roster, but we assume this is the group Valentina Allegra de Fontaine began to put together in The Falcon and The Winter Soldier. If so, John Walker/U.S. Agent is a safe bet, with Baron Zemo, Abomination, and Yelena Belova/Black Widow strong possibilities. Ghost, Taskmaster, and Winter Soldier are also mentioned as potential members.

Expect a mix of established characters and new faces, anyway. Marvel has reportedly been in touch with "certain individuals who are already part of the MCU to make sure to keep an opening in their schedules for next summer."

What do you guys make of this news? Which characters would you put on the team? Let us know in the usual place.

Can we have a villain with “damaged” tattooed on their forehead?

@QuietStorm - me too. Thank goodness it’s a movie, I just don’t love the shows as much. It is what it is

I’m hoping the main cast is made up entirely of previously introduced MCU villains. No need to introduce too many new characters here, develop the existing ones.

@RichardGrayson - one problem is most mcu villains die in their movies

@dracula -
There's plenty of MCU villains that are still alive. Hell, the Leader and Justin Hammer have been MIA for a while now.

Just one of the team-ups Marvel Studios is setting up, I'm sure

It won't just be an "Avengers" film every few years, it'll be like 3 or 4 different groups

I really hope they get Bullseye in the mix. Tim Roth I could see being in there. Obviously Zemo will lead. U.S Agent, Florence Pugh Black Widow. Who else we got?

This is the Marvel movie I have been most excited about getting announced for a long time.

@CaptainMexico - I know she has a connection to Val, who will likely be the Nick Fury of the Thunderbolts, but I don’t really see Yelena as a villain. I think it’s more likely she becomes the new Black Widow of the Young Avengers.

@lordSTALE - I wouldn't mind this team. Minus Deadpool.

And I want Justin Hammer there as their team's Tinkerer type character.
