hey cool article. i actually decide to look up when all the rights revert back to marvel, and i ended up finding this very article. now as i was reading i went to the bottom and read some comments, and the last comment i read was this...

"I’ve heard elsewhere that the contract at Fox for DareDevil started in 2001 and was over after 6 years, Elektra was part of that deal, so Marvel has them back.

The Fantastic Four contract with Fox is supposedly an 8 year deal so it’ll end in late 2010.

The Blade contract was signed way back in 1997 so it is over now.

The Sony deal with Ghostrider ends in 2011.

Sony has Spider-Man 4 & 5 but after that they’re done.

Fox’s extension deal for X-Men is for 6 years and was signed in 2008 so by 2015 everything should be back at Marvel."

now i honestly dont know if any of that is true, but i found it pretty interesting, and thought i would post up here to see if anybody else had any info on when all these film rights would revert back to marvel

wouldnt it be just brilliant if Marvel got back the rights to ALL their characters? imagine the Human Torch appearing in Spider-Man, Iron Man being in Daredevil, The Fantastic Four and The Avengers...god, those movies would be the BEST ever! :)
CaptainAmerica
CaptainAmerica - 8/13/2009, 9:16 PM
@NJDevil, contracts usually dont work that way, as long as the company is making movies then they get to keep the rights unless Marvel buys them. There is a certain timeframe for which a film has to be produced which is why there is an unreleased Fantastic Four film from the 90's.

@captainamerica, yeah i know, but i think what the guy that posted that comment ment, was if they didnt make any movies that's when the contracts would expire.

well hopefully fox stops making X-Men films so we can get an accurate X film by 2015, but I doubt that would happen because FOX is milking X films right now due to the fan base that don't read the comics.

Interesting article.

CaptainAmerica,
Actually, the way contracts usually work is conditional. Marvel still 'owns' the rights to these characters - what they do is farm out the rights to these other companies for a) a time period, and b) a number of films. So whichever comes up first is what causes the contract to expire.

So its not a case of "as long as they keep making movies they own the rights until Marvel buys them back." No one would ever unconditionally sell the rights like that. Say someone buys the rights to Thor (god forbid) it would be something like a three movie deal with a five year clause that causes the Option to expire if nothing is produced.
