There's been chatter about a sequel to 2019's Alita: Battle Angel for a while now, but with still no official word on whether the franchise has a future at Disney, any rumours you read should be taken with a pinch of salt.
The world premiere of Avatar: The Way of Water took place in London on Tuesday evening, and Alita producer Jon Landau was on hand to discuss a possible follow-up from director Robert Rodriguez. As you might recall, James Cameron originally planned to helm before handing the project over to The Book of Boba Fett director so he could focus on his (many) Avatar sequels.
"There's a little film called Alita: Battle Angel that we'd love to circle back and do a sequel to," Landau confirms in the video below (via SFFGazette.com). "I'm talking to Robert about that and hopefully, that comes to fruition. I never put a timeframe on anything 'cause you guys will hold it against me."
That's a very promising update and lines up with what Rodriguez said last December when he confirmed meeting with Cameron to talk about a possible expansion of the franchise.
Alita: Battle Angel was a moderate success at the box office with a $405 million haul globally, but received mixed reviews from critics. Cameron, who is now working with Disney on his Avatar franchise, produced and co-wrote the movie, so he no doubt has the power to convince the studio it's a property worth revisiting.
We'll have to wait and see, but with fans making it clear they're keen on a sequel, there's a chance Disney will take note. It all boils down to whether they consider another Alita movie a worthwhile investment, especially as the first had a reported production budget of $150 million - $200 million (which really isn't that cheap when studios are now looking to save money).
