The first trailer for Luc Besson's Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets is set to debut at some point tomorrow, but ahead of that we have this early peek at Rihanna's enigmatic character. Details on this stunning lady are sparse, but EW reports that the 1920s flapper getup we see her in below is actually just one of several different personas she inhabits in the movie.

“Rihanna was my first wish,” Besson explains. “First, because of her voice and the way she smiles and looks and how she expresses herself. Second, because you know she won’t be intimidated on the set. She plays stadiums with 100,000 people. You know that girl isn’t shy about the camera and the crew and all this.”

Valerian (Dane DeHaan) and Laureline (Cara Delevingne) are special operatives for the government of the human territories charged with maintaining order throughout the universe. Valerian has more in mind than a professional relationship with his partner- blatantly chasing after her with propositions of romance. But his extensive history with women, and her traditional values, drive Laureline to continuously rebuff him.

Under directive from their Commander (Clive Owen), Valerian and Laureline embark on a mission to the breathtaking intergalactic city of Alpha, an ever-expanding metropolis comprised of thousands of different species from all four corners of the universe. Alpha’s seventeen million inhabitants have converged over time- uniting their talents, technology and resources for the betterment of all. Unfortunately, not everyone on Alpha shares in these same objectives; in fact, unseen forces are at work, placing our race in great danger.

Valerian also stars John Goodman, Ethan Hawke, Clive Owen, Rutger Hauer and Rihanna, and is set to hit theaters on July 21, 2017.

This movie sounds like a mix between Chicago & 5 Element

Besson is hit and miss. Unlike most, I hated The Fifth Element, but I did enjoy Lucy and Nikita and Leon were awesome. This looks like it could go either way. Rihanna doesn't put me off as he's most likely just gonna be used sparingly anyway, and is lovely to look at.

@RorMachine - Your the first person I've ever heard that "hated" that movie. What made you not like it?

Looks like to avoid any attempt of acting they will just cut in bits of her latest music video into the movie.

Only good films he's done have been Leon and Nikita. Lucy is dumb fun though.
