Oscar Isaac Has Some Advice For Fans Who Didn't Like STAR WARS: THE LAST JEDI

You don't need us to tell you that Star Wars: The Last Jedi was a controversial movie but star Oscar Isaac (Poe Dameron) has now weighed in on the matter and has some advice for dissatisfied fanboys...

Star Wars: The Last Jedi was a critical and commercial hit but it didn't strike the right chord with a lot of fans who were disappointed by some of the decisions made by writer and director Rian Johnson.

At this point, those issues have been talked to death but that hasn't stopped many fanboys continuing to attack the filmmaker and some even got together to try and raise money for a bizarre-sounding remake. As it turns out, star Oscar Isaac supports that latter decision and has now shared his thoughts on what those who didn't like The Last Jedi should do about it in a recent interview about the movie.

"What I think is really special about the whole thing — particularly for people that really didn’t agree with where the story went — is that it’s often a great inspiration to do your own stuff," he explains. "Obviously, making your own Star Wars movie is a bit of a tough challenge, but at least from a narrative standpoint maybe you make your own thing and then show what you would want. Make what you would want to see." It's hard to argue with that but it sadly hasn't quite gone that way.

After all, shortly after the movie was released, an edited version titled The Last Jedi: De-Feminized Fanedit which reduced the role of female characters was "released" on Pirate Bay and if you can't see why that's problematic, God help you! For now, fans will have to hope Episode IX manages to deliver.

I loved The Last Jedi. I understand some of the complaints, narratively it feels like a part 2 of episode 7 moreso than episode 8, but I liked it overall.

@Oberlin4Prez - Honestly i understand the complaints, inconsistencies and I get the critiques. But the hyperbole of how bad some people perceive it is incredible.

Like it's not a masterpiece, but there's lots of amazing elements in it. It's Mos all over again x10. Like it's not a perfect movie, but it's not horrible. And it's STILL better than episodes 1-3.

@Deonox - I did not enjoy the movie. And to be clear... it did not ruin my childhood and I did not mind women being in the movie.

For me, I felt it was an exhausting and endless barrage of "gotcha!" moments. It was almost as if so many dicisions were made simply to tell fans that they were doing exactly the opposite of what you thought they were going to do.

Also, there were waaaaaaay to many time when things made no sense. Slow bombers? Why not use the faster y-wings to take down capitol ships like in Rogue One? They don't need a crew of three in a ship that needs to drop bombs in 0 gravity (seriously) and the only way to do that is a remote not attached to anything. Or why not have any ship in the New Order fleet hyperspace jump in front of the fleeing Resistance and finish them? Or just let the fighters do it, since they already were until they stopped for no reason?

Things like that and so many more seemed like major plot points were done or not done simply to accommodate the script that someone wanted to write.

And look... all of this is fine, it just made me personally not enjoy the film. If others enjoyed it, that's fine too.

I take small issue with Isaac basically saying "well, if you don't like it, why don't you do something better?" That's an easy way to try and silence anyone who might criticze art. And as an artist, I understand being frusrtated being critiqued by those who don't understand the process and passion of creation.

But he needs to know that if every person who bought a ticket and had an issue with that film went out and started making films, there would be a lot less folks going to see the movies, as they would be out making them. So he should be thankful they are at least (for now) going, whether they like the film or not and whether he likes their critiques or not, as they supply him with a paycheck.

PS... I am not talking about the fans who act awful, and I realize he probably is to some extent. I am only speaking for those who did not like the film and try to act like normal people.

@Deonox - you see, holdo ramming her ship into something begs the question, why didn’t they do that in a new hope? Finn’s Objectivity useless character could have had a decent ending if another factually OBJECTIVELY terrible character (I’m not racist or sexist i assure you) didn’t ruin it.

Did you know that everything Luke would ever do ever was officially announced at the end of rotj? TLJ specifically ignores that head-canon, I mean CANON.

The last Jedi is factually the worst thing that ever happened to your childhood. Admit it!

@TomSolo - slow bombers could probably be easily explained if anyone really cared.

I mean

Does that really bother you. It’s a space magic movie. They made a ship slow for dramatic effect. Where is the issue here.

@JohnnyAssCheeks - just watched this and honestly RLM are the only people whose negative opinion I can take when it comes to these kinds of movies, only because their entire lives aren't emotionally linked to their enjoyment of a movie. They can like it or hate it, but they don't care.

@BloodyBed - It’s simply what I think about when I watch movies. I have one of those irritating brains that when I am bored (happens very easily) I over-analyze the crap out of things.

The bombers wouldn’t have bothered me so much if we hadn’t just seen y-wings the previous year take down capitol ships in a movie that took place probably at least 20 years before this one. I mean, who would design a ship so slow and jeez I could go on forever about this crap.

If I was entertained by the movie, I wouldn’t have noticed so many things that bothered me. But I was really bored during this one. I didn’t like it at all, so when I watched it, I just began criticizing a lot.

And really, I feel fine about the issues I have with it. If I were in charge of the studio, I would not have chosen to go this route. But, alas, I am not.

Like the man said, Star Wars fans are prickly.

@RocknRolla - Neil Degrasse Tyson or Oscar Isaac? Cause I was quoting the former, who actually should be listened to by just about everyone. (And that is with absolute and all due respect to Isaac. But science is facts; entertainment is subjective, and there is no accounting for tastes.)

@Nebula - I'm pretty sure I know what he meant overall, but all the same someone caught him goofing up a thought.

I have enjoyed the new films so far. I'd like a DE-ANNOYINGISED edit- take out all of Finn and whatshername's bits and just pretend he never woke up and died in his sleep. Ideal movie.
