That Long Rumored OBI-WAN KENOBI Movie Could Start Shooting Sooner Than We Expected

With Solo: A Star Wars Story a couple of weeks away from being released, rumours have started swirling about the next Anthology movie from Lucasfilm and the signs are once again pointing to Obi-Wan Kenobi.

According to a new report, Lucasfilm has started working on Obi-Wan Kenobi's long-rumoured spinoff movie with work starting on concept art, props and storyboards (which is a little odd considering the fact a director hasn't been attached but the studio could be talking to any number of filmmakers).

The plan apparently is for filming to take place in London's Pinewood Studios after work on Episode IX wraps up later this year. Shooting wouldn't actually start until April 2019 but Obi-Wan would "move onto stages" in January. The lines up with a previous report and it's worth noting that it Billy Elliot helmer Stephen Daldry was in talks to direct last August, so he may have now signed on to the movie.

However, we should point out that Lucasfilm still hasn't officially announced the movie unlike the new movies from Rian Johnson and David Benioff & D.B. Weiss. It's also hard to imagine Obi-Wan meeting that rumoured December 2020 release date, especially as the fifth Indiana Jones film is coming out that year and Avatar 2 and Sherlock Holmes 3 will already be doing battle at the box office that month.

We'll have to wait and see for now but be sure to share your thoughts in the comments section.

This I'm way more excited to see. Rogue One and the Solo films don't interest me one bit but this has more potential.
And even if coming out during Avatar 2 and Sherlock 3 this will do far better.

They need to to make this and a Boba Fett movie

@Hardfelt - bobba Fett, while awesome as a side character, had no personality. Not sure how they could make that film without changing who he was in the previous movies. But it's Disney so I'm sure we'll get it ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

@ThorArms - I have a 1/4 sleeve dedicated to Boba and while I love the badass that he is, I tend to agree with you. Unless it’s set before the OT. Then they can have have pretty much free reign on the character. Either way, I’d watch it.

@ThorArms - check out Star Wars Tales by Dark Horse comics. It has a great story where BF and DV lock horns. Intense. Its that kind of thing that they could do.

That is very exciting. I love getting Star Wars without any Jedi but one all about a Jedi is fun too. Plus Obi-Wan is one of my baby bro’s favorite fictional characters so that adds to my excitement.

So glad we are finally getting projects like this. Very excited to see what the Johnson trilogy is about and what Benioff and Weiss are doing. Plus hey Lucasfilm make that Boba Fett film already.

I'm so looking forward to Han Solo, but I can't wait to see Obi-wan Kenobi, bring back Qui-gon Jinn.

@Arrowverse27 - No prequel to The Phantom Menace, this movie is set between Episode III and IV. Obi-wan must learn from his former master, Qui-Gon. We better at least hear his voice and give wisdom to Obi-wan.

This was confirmed awhile back now, no longer rumored.

Only if Ewan McGregor reprise his role otherwise there is no reason for me to watch this spinoff.

Ewan McGregor was the best part of the prequels. He was pretty much the reason I watched them, and he's the reason I still do every now and again! Bring it!

I just hope they scale it back a bit, make it a more character driven story with nuance, Ive seen enough space battles and explosions to last me a lifetime

Jedi Bantha Poodoo.

Make new and good stuff, dammit. Enough fanservice-driven films.

I wish these spin offs would zoom out on the Star Wars universe instead of continuing to zoom in of the most microscopic details.

I'd love an Obi-Wan movie but still wish for a KOTOR movie or tv series. Doesnt need to follow Revan, just set in that time period.

This would allow for more original stories that arent tied to the main trilogy at all.
