ALIEN: COVENANT Star Katherine Waterston Compares Her Character To Sigourney Weaver's Ripley

When stills gave us a look at Katherine Waterston's Daniels, fans of the franchise quickly commented on the Ripley vibes evoked in the images and that's something the Steve Jobs actress is fully embracing.

The Alien films are at their best when they feature a strong female protagonist overcoming the grotesque, chest-bursting galactic parasites and that's apparently where director Ridley Scott is returning with the introduction of Katherine Waterston's Daniels in his Prometheus-sequel/Alien-prequel. Waterston states, “You don’t really know what you’re made of until you’re tested," in describing her character's arc in the film.  Personally, I can't think of a more difficult pop quiz than trying to figure out how to survive rapidly-reproducing aliens that use your body as an incubator.

The Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them actress further comments on the similarities between Daniels and Ripley, adding, "They are both able to somehow think clearly in really shocking, unimaginable scenarios. It’s fun to play someone who can thrive in that chaos.

In real life, Waterston admits to being something of a scaredy-cat, having to close her eyes while watching the original Ridley sci-fi masterpieces.  “I’m very squeamish.  I’ve seen these movies many times, but I feel like I’ve barely seen any of the alien scenes because my eyes are usually covered.”  It will be interesting to see if some of that terror makes its way into her performance as what appears to be a badass, machine gun-wielding space explorer.

Still not happy Dr. Elizabeth Shaw/Noomi Rapace only has a cameo role here. Terrific actress and excellent character.

I'm confused as where this is going or what Ridley is trying to do here. I thought Ridley was creating something new the Engineers and their relationship to humanity and would continue on with that story and themes, but now we're back to "ALIEN" and xenomorphs............Ummm okay -__-

@Presence1 - This whole trilogy is meant to be a prequel to Alien.

We don't know where the 3rd film will put us, but in this one, the ship that David the Android and Shaw were on crash landed on either the Paradise planet they were looking for, or a different planet that has Xenos on it.

Either way, if you pay attention to Prometheus its pretty obvious that Xenos existed before that movie and the Engineers are fully aware of them.

The proto alien at the end threw everyone off, but the pieces are there that point to Engineers knowing about Xenos. The Xeno mural on the wall in the canister room is a dead giveaway. David finds green slime on a door panel which is very reminiscent of Xeno slime. The Engineers set up the canisters the same way a Xeno Queen sets up her eggs.

Its all very telling that the Engineers created the Xenos or they knew about them and are making their own.

Hell, the event that happened 2000 years ago that caused all of the Engineers to flee and die could have very well been a Xeno outbreak during their experiments.

So they really aren't just shoe-horning Xenos in. They were clearly going in that direction in Prometheus.

I really like Katherine Waterston...

But there's only ONE RIPLEY

Same goes for every other female in this franchise who's a pseudo Ripley.

I'll allow it; and I look forward to this movie very much. (There is no way for this not to offend someone) But this Ripley-emulating angle is getting tired. There is nothing wrong with casting a woman as the lead, but it's been every damn movie and spinoff that has come out, that they feel the need to offer their take on that very same, specific, and repetitive story trait. That's seven movies now. Granted, Ripley herself was the star of the first four, but they are shoehorned into a storytelling element that doesn't need to be a steadfast rule. The world can be so much bigger.
