Ridley Scott Confirms New Alien With Michael Fassbender's David, Says Franchise "Needs Help" After Romulus

Filmmaker Ridley Scott has confirmed that he will direct the Alien: Romulus sequel, shifting focus to concluding his prequel trilogy after Fede Álvarez's "okay" contribution to the franchise.

1979's Alien is an undisputed classic and the film that put Ridley Scott on the map. However, his return to the franchise with 2012's Prometheus and the 2017 follow-up, Alien: Covenant, wasn't quite as successful.

While both received mostly positive reviews, Prometheus was heavily criticised for its convoluted plot and a long list of unanswered questions. Alien: Covenant didn't really address most of those, and came under fire for narrative contradictions and some big swings with the mythology.

The latter was also a box office flop, leading to the franchise being shelved for the better part of a decade. So, Alien: Romulus, while heavy on nostalgia, was widely considered an improvement. It was also better reviewed than Prometheus and Alien: Covenant, with 80% on Rotten Tomatoes, compared to their 73% and 65%.

Fede Álvarez reportedly wanted to use Michael Fassbender's David in his Alien: Romulus sequel, bridging the gap between the movies. Scott objected, leaving the project without a director and placing the franchise back in limbo.

As we first reported on SFFGazette.com, the Gladiator helmer has now revealed that he's "rewriting the next Alien film" with the intention of completing his prequel trilogy. "Actually, I suddenly went back and got involved," he says in the video below. "The one that just came out [2024’s Alien: Romulus] was OK. I think it needs some help. So, I’ve gone back in."

Scott continued, "I’ve already got a footprint for the next Alien. We did Prometheus, and then Alien: Covenant. So, I’m picking up where we left off in Covenant with Michael Fassbender, who now thinks he’s Ozymandias."

While fans are eager to see more of David, Scott dismissing Alien: Romulus as "OK" has split opinions. Many fans are also questioning whether the filmmaker is the right choice to return to the franchise, given that he hailed The Dog Stars—which has 39% on Rotten Tomatoes—as his best movie since The Martian

Elaborating on plans for David, Scott said, "I like the fact that AI has gone off the rails. If we go AI, the moment we discover it’s off the rails is too late. It could switch every digital thing off in the world like that. You’d have [frick]ing chaos. It’s that kind of stuff that’s scary."

It's unclear whether 20th Century Studios will greenlight Scott's planned Alien sequel. Either way, this isn't the fresh start for the franchise that many fans were hoping for after Romulus

Ridley Scott can f**k off, respectfully.

Covenant was trash. It’s been a while since I’ve enjoyed one of his films.

@ThorArms - Haha, its funny, but i honestly think in his mind he's like "[frick] everybody im just gona do what I want to do and can get away with". He's at that point in his life.

Covenant was decent, but I would have prefered a more direct follow up to the Prometheus.

I think his sequel and a Romulus sequel can co exist.. just drop the Romulus one on streaming like the previous one was suppose to.

@UnderBelly - why drop a Romulus sequel straight to streaming when it did better at the BO than Covenant

@ThorArms - The Martian or American Gangster was one of the last good movies he made

@ThorArms -

Ridley Scott acts like he's James Cameron.

Romulus was a solid movie, and leagues better than anything he's added to the franchise in decades.

@CrimmLives03 - It wasn't bad per se, but wasn't anything I hadn't seen before either. Great performances, but in the 3rd act I just remember my kid and I trolling the ending. I was more engaged with the prometheus stuff. Romulus regardless of what anyone thinks to me just felt like more of the same.

@ThorArms - Absolutely no one at the studio has the nerve to sit grandpa down for a serious talk and (gently yet firmly) take the ALIEN Franchise keys away from him. 🤨

Let's be honest. Due to his age, this may not happen. Take from that, what you will.

@FASELI -

There's nothing to take from that aside from the fact that he's in his late 80's and these movies take anywhere between 5-7 years to produce and screen going from pre-production and development, all the way to the actual theatrical run.

Even if they started pre-production today, Ridley Scott is not out promoting this movie on the press tour (assuming they successfully film it) in 2032/35-ish, in his mid-late 90's.

Assuming he even lives that long......

The only way this would have happened would be if they were in post-production now, or doing reshoots and prepping the movie for a late 2027 or early 2028 release.

@FASELI - same as 81 year old George Miller saying after his next movie, he’s doing another Mad Max, followed by a Mad Max TV series then putting the franchise up for sale.

I definitely think keeping busy helps you live longer, but my man - that’s a lot of grueling shoots for an 81 year old to be planning.

The franchise needs more films like ‘Romulus’, not “help” from you, Ridley.

"Says Franchise "Needs Help" After Romulus"

whale he's not wrong about that, Romulus was crap.

glad that David is back, just hope they hire a good writer for this one.

@skyshark03191 - I’m not a massive alien fan but Romulus was one of the better ones. I was pleasantly surprised. Convenant had one brilliant scene and that was literally it. Scott sounds like a miserable, grumpy, old man who fails to accept that his best hits are behind him.
HashTagSwagg
HashTagSwagg - 8/29/2026, 2:58 PM
Romulus was worse than prometheus but for different reasons.
Alien Earth is the worst because it turned a cinematic monster into a barely passible straight to DVD Asylum movie.

He's an asshole that's still bitter about Aliens.
HashTagSwagg
HashTagSwagg - 8/29/2026, 3:08 PM
@XenoJazz - Why was he going to team with Cameron on Alien 5 if he hated what the guy did before?
XenoJazz
XenoJazz - 8/29/2026, 3:27 PM
@HashTagSwagg - He was upset that they didnt ask him back for the sequel and that a lot of people think Aliens is better than Alien. I think they are both perfect in their own unique way but he's shut down multiple Alien projects due to his ego.
MotherGooseUPus
MotherGooseUPus - 8/29/2026, 4:45 PM
@XenoJazz - hes an arrogant old f*ck for sure. Personally I think Aliens is better than Alien but both are the best in the franchise and its not close.

Regardless I do NOT want Scott directing another Alien movie after the last 2 he did were garbage. The black goo is the f*cking worst thing ever to happen to this franchise
XenoJazz
XenoJazz - 8/29/2026, 4:53 PM
@MotherGooseUPus - Aliens is my favorite film of all time. I think its better in every way. Again I LOVE them both but Aliens is on another level.
MotherGooseUPus
MotherGooseUPus - 8/29/2026, 8:09 PM
@XenoJazz - well I would agree its definitely better than Alien, imo. But the news Scott wants to do another movie does not excite me at all

@MotherGooseUPus - Yeah Scott has been washed for awhile now. Covenant sucks.

@XenoJazz - Alien is arguably the greatest horror film of all time. Aliens is good but it's an action film.
XenoJazz
XenoJazz - 8/30/2026, 12:26 AM
@McMurdo - Alien probably is the greatest horror film of all time but I think Aliens IS the greatest action movie of all time.
SuperiorHeckler
SuperiorHeckler - 8/30/2026, 11:06 AM
@XenoJazz - I always like to point this out that if Scott had his way back in 1979, one of the most iconic movies of all-time would have concluded with Ripley's head being bit-off and the Xenomorph sitting down in the pilot's chair of the Narcissus life-boat to mimic the voice of Captain Dallas signing off.

I phucking kid you not. 😳
XenoJazz
XenoJazz - 8/30/2026, 6:47 PM
@SuperiorHeckler - Yup. If Scott had his way that movie is not the classic it is today.

Romulus was the first return to form Alien movie since 3. This dude needs to realize that he just needs to make an AI horror movie and stop trying to ruin the Alien franchise with dumb AI is bad guy plots.
McMurdo
McMurdo - 8/30/2026, 12:08 AM
@B1ackManta - ironic considering Romulus bordered on Alien parody and coulda been made by AI.

Dude is so past his prime it’s not even funny. He should retire.

Also, Romulus did [frick]ing laps around Prometheus and Covenant.
McMurdo
McMurdo - 8/30/2026, 12:09 AM
@TheLobster - I'd watch either of those over Romulus all day. That shit was parody.
TheLobster
TheLobster - 8/30/2026, 11:06 AM
@McMurdo - oh and Covenant wasn’t? Go watch the flute scene and tell me Romulus is a parody. Be real.

The only thing that was lame was the “stay away from her” call back. Everything else was solid for a franchise that is borderline dead.
