ALIEN: ROMULUS Has Finished Shooting Ahead Of 2024 Theatrical Release Confirms Director Fede Álvarez

It's been far too long since we saw a live-action Xenomorph lay waste to a ship full of hapless humans, and filmmaker Fede Álvarez has now confirmed that his upcoming reboot, Alien: Romulus, has wrapped.

20th Century Studios' new Alien movie starring Cailee Spaeny (Mare of Easttown) began production in Budapest back in March with Evil Dead and Don't Breathe director Fede Álvarez behind the camera directing the carnage.

David Jonsson (Industry), Archie Renaux (Shadow and Bone), Spike Fearn (The Batman), Aileen Wu (Away from Home), and Isabela Merced (Rosaline) also star in a movie the synopsis describes as follows: "In this ninth entry in the immensely popular and enduring film series, a group of young people on a distant world find themselves in a confrontation with the most terrifying life form in the universe."

Now, the filmmaker has confirmed (via SFFGazette.com) that production on the reboot, titled Alien: Romulus, has wrapped.

Unfortunately, the photo he shared doesn't reveal any new details, but this latest update bodes well for the movie and hopefully means a first look is incoming. We don't expect anything to drop imminently, though, as it was only last month Disney confirmed the next chapter in the Alien franchise will arrive in theaters on August 16, 2024.

Álvarez directs from a screenplay he wrote with his frequent collaborator Rodo Sayagues. Ridley Scott, who directed the original Alien and produced and directed the aforementioned latest two instalments, and Michael Pruss (Boston Strangler) are producing under their Scott Free banner.

Brent O’Connor (Bullet Train), Elizabeth Cantillon (Persuasion) and Tom Moran (The Donut King) all serve as executive producers.

It's previously been reported that Álvarez pitched a new Alien movie to Scott several years ago, with the legendary filmmaker later reaching out to make it a reality. We'd be shocked if there isn't some connective tissue to the original franchise here, but don't anticipate any of these characters having "Ripley" as a surname.

You can take a closer look at Álvarez's announcement in the Instagram post below.

Let it go.

The last novel thing Alien-wise was Prometheus' plotline.

Oh but of course, the Mouse needs that money back.

OK, keep milking then.

@Fogs - ya I loved prometheus. But I guess the audience didn't. So now they're being safe with simple alien movies

@Vigor - I mean, people usually hate Prometheus because the scientists are stupid, and I totally get that. But in these movies people kind of need to do stupid shit so the story can happen.

But damn, it's a film about the frickin' ENGINEERS. That's different and exciting. I have the script and it's sci-fi gold.
Didn't even need that xenomorph in the end IMO - it was more of a payoff to the GA who thinks that's what Alien is about.

In my opinion it's not. The space horror is the key, we don't really need another slasher film in space, this gets old so quickly.

Well, but when I think about it, we have so many sequels to so many slasher films... So maybe people are into it.
Not my cup of tea. I like a nice space suspense for a change.

@Vigor - I really liked it too. Was a bit disappointed that it did not seem to have quite as much of a connection to the original Alien as I expected, but it was a really cool standalone movie.

@Fogs - I can white knight all the BS in Prometheus easily anyway. The scientists are crap because the mission requried them to sign on without even knowing where they are going (who would do that?), and because the scientists are nothing to do with why they are actually going there. They are a superfulous cover and entirely expendible, hence David starting to mess with their DNA for kicks.

Worst thing is the movie is "run to the side!" That's a hard one but I'm sure some dumn fight-or-flight lizard brain explanation could be thought up for it to.
Fogs
Fogs - 7/6/2023, 10:32 AM
@RealTurner - hahaha true.

if the scene was faster it could be explained by the size of the ship. She could run sideways but biting it anyway.

@Fogs - It's hard to watch, I admit it. Like really, just run to the side. Putting the characters in that position was super questionnable, but I guess they aren't thinking straight-or too straight, in this case-and aren't really looking behind them. I dunno.

I love the movie though. Even with all the issues. Because it's something so different and it almost, most of it works, but it almost completely works. The unfathomable reaction of the Engineer is what a spider must feel like just before the boot comes down.

Holy shit. There's STILL IP that Disney hasn't officially ruined 100%?

I'm sure this will be the exception.

Goddamn the world is bereft of originality and creativity - or at least Hollywood is.

I hope it loses Indy 5 money.

@Batmangina - I can't really think of any right now. Maybe there are a few like Prey that flew under the radar that I can't think of

Always have time for well made movies, it's a very fine line sometimes, between what makes something good or very generic

@SimplyAz - i loved Prey, best Alien/Predator movie to come out since Aliens (although "Predators" is a guilty pleasure movie of mine and very underrated). If this movie is half as good as Prey i'll be wicked happy
SimplyAz
SimplyAz - 7/6/2023, 8:18 AM
@MotherGooseUPus -

I rewatched Predators, just before I saw Prey, and I was genuinely surprised by how good it was, definitely deserved a sequel, also a clever way to take the franchise forward at the time.
Brody was good as the lead as well
MotherGooseUPus
MotherGooseUPus - 7/6/2023, 9:55 AM
@SimplyAz - agreed. it was a very clever way to take the franchise and i really liked it. Not sure where the hate comes from for the movie. Brody was actually really good, didnt think he would be but he was.

I just hope the new Alien movie goes back to the roots of Alien/Aliens of what made those sooooo good.

I'll give it a chance, I love his Evil Dead reboot. Keep it simple and practical, that's literally all you need for a movie like this. Somehow they'll mess it up lol

Sometimes it seems like Hollywood might actually be learning and investing the big money in highly original, clever, and interesting thrillers, horrors, comedies. Then they just fall back into making regurgitations of old tired IP.

The last superhero movie/show I remember not being just excited for, but obsessed with, was Legion. Creativity on crack. It got too wierd and abstract for it’s own good sometimes, but it was always interesting.

Last horror I was super excited about sure wasn’t Halloween 56.5 or Alien: Forgettable Subtitle, it was Barbarian (although I [frick]ing hated the second half, the setup was so original and intruiging and creative.

Looking at Apple TV’s most popular shows at the moment, it’s Silo, Hijack, Ted Lasso, and Crowded Room. Scifi, thriller, comedy… give me more of that at the movies!

SauronthePower
SauronthePower - 7/6/2023, 11:59 PM
@micvalpro - an attempt at humor, I suppose

Let me explain what quite obviously sailed over your head(s): Blomkamp was in the process of trying to legitimately resuscitate this franchise and supposedly had Weaver on board but Scott pulled the legacy card and what we were left with was the detritus that was ‘Prometheus’ and ‘Covanent.’

Now, we are left with scraps and no real passion for the franchise, so I ask, once again…..is this REALLY necessary??

It's a reboot as well?

"a group of young people on a distant world find themselves in a confrontation with the most terrifying life form in the universe."

Guaranteed bomb.

Straight to hulu?

Maybe it'll be alright, ala Prey.

If in theaters, no chance.
