It's been a while since we've heard anything about War for the Planet of the Apes, but following the news that a first look at the movie will debut at the New York Comic-Con later this month, 20th Century Fox has released the first official synopsis. While it sounds like we're still at least a movie or two away from apes ruling the Earth, this instalment should take us yet another step closer to that.

In ‘War for the Planet of the Apes,’ the third chapter of the critically acclaimed blockbuster franchise, Caesar and his apes are forced into a deadly conflict with an army of humans led by a ruthless Colonel. After the apes suffer unimaginable losses, Caesar wrestles with his darker instincts and begins his own mythic quest to avenge his kind. As the journey finally brings them face to face, Caesar and the Colonel are pitted against each other in an epic battle that will determine the fate of both their species and the future of the planet.

Matt Reeves will return to direct War for the Planet of the Apes, while Andy Serkis will of course be back as Caesar. Woody Harrelson is expected to play the villainous Colonel mentioned above.

Are you looking forward to the movie? As always, share your thoughts in the comments section below.

@BillCipher999 - If I did Top 10 lists, that and Winter Soldier would probably be in my top 5 movies from that year.

@BillCipher999 - Definitely one of the best of 2014 and that was the same year Days of Future Past, Winter Soldier, and Guardians came out.

@BillCipher999 - I think they'll have to. Overall, Koba's actions led to war.

Can't wait for this, if they pull it off that'll make these films part of that rare class of trilogies where every film is fantastic, and rarer still one of said class that consists of chapters in an overarching story, not three different books. Wanna see Caesar go full badass and spring an epic guerilla attack on the humans, maybe something similar to the new Magnificent Seven, with traps and stuff. And I wanna see gorillas play a bigger part in this one. Gorillas are way cooler than chimps.

Dawn was awesome. Rise was an instant classic for me. I hope this can be as good as Rise but if it's even close to Dawn, I'll be happy.

This could low-key be one of the best trilogies ever.

LOVED the first 2, enjoyed the story of Rise more than Dawn, but thought both were fantastic.
