BOX OFFICE: CARRIE Fails To Take The Top Spot On Friday As GRAVITY Continues To Dominate

With Halloween just weeks away, moviegoers clearly find the prospect of being lost in space far more terrifying than Kimberly Peirce's bloody adaptation of the classic Stephen King novel. Hit the jump for details on how both Carrie and Gravity look set to perform at the box office this weekend!

Deadline have some early numbers for this week at the North American box office, and it appears as if Alfonso Cuaron's Gravity will take the top spot for the third straight weekend in a row. Despite facing stiff competition form big new releases like Carrie and Escape Plan, the movie - which stars George Clooney and Sandra Bullock - took $8.8 million on Friday and looks set for a $29.3 million weekend (giving it a total of $168.9 million). Unfortunately, the remake of Carrie has fallen flat with a 'B-' CinemaScore and a $7 million Friday for a projected weekend total of between $17 million - $19 million. However, with a budget of only $30 million, the R-Rated horror flick could still prove to be a success when it opens overseas. What are you guys seeing this weekend?

gravity is film of the year for me,one dodgy scene involving a fire extinguisher towards the end but overall a fantastic movie.

Judging from the trailers, all gravity has going for it is visuals. Other than that, it looks bland and boring. Prisoners is film of the year out of everything I've seen that's came out this year. Go see, Prisoners! It's phenomenal. Very intense and emotional ride.

In terms of special effects and cinematography, Gravity might be one of the best films I've ever seen. But that doesn't excuse the predictable nature of the movie. I understand that the movie was done to focus on what it would be like to adrift in space but it still could've thrown in twists here and there. When I watch movies I'm always thinking about how they're gonna end it and the ending of this film was fairly predictable.

I saw GRAVITY in IMAX 3D...nothing short of spectacular.

I saw Carrie last night...it was pretty good, not bad for a remake. Chloe Moretz & Julianne Moore's scenes were intense.

Saw Gravity yesterday. What a breathtaking movie. So far it's the best non-CBM I've seen this year.

Omarvls: That's one way to make sure Justice League is shit, make it just like Man of Steel. Visually it's good but it's overall bland and lifeless. Probably would get it if Snyder directs JL so, I guess it wouldn't matter.

the results for carrie arent that shocking since remakes don't usually make that much money anyway but i think if carrie had opened at least closer to ther 31st of october it might have stood a chance since thats when people would want to see a horror film

Gravity was great with few flaws, but it wasn't bad at all. The only movie that I enjoyed the most this year was The World's End.

I didn't care for the original Carrie, so I have no desire to see the remake. I saw Gravity earlier this week and it is simply amazing. If you see it, do yourself a favor and do so in IMAX 3D. I'm not a 3D fan, but for the visuals in this movie, you really do need that IMAX screen experience.

@Marvel72

The fire extinguisher scene was my favorite. In my head I was like, "WALL-EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!" ...lol

@TheHeat

I Honestly didn't think about Wall-E when I saw that scene. If anything it reminded me of Dead Space 3 when you have to fly out in space.

All the movie needed to beat Gravity was some full frontal, we are still talking about Escape Plan right?

Gravity is visually great but a mediocre story telling experience. Carrie sucked as all suck can be.

Gravity was a great movie and I'm not sure why people say it's "so predictable." What'd you think they were going to kill off Sandra's character? Of course not.

Just because she lives doesn't mean you were able to predict the ending, I doubt anyone predicted much that happened in that film - it was very surprising and incredibly thought provoking.

It deserves the money it's making and while the hype is definitely at an all-time high, it deserves most, if not all of it.

Ya if you call gravity dull and lifeless I'm assuming you are a 12 year old. Just cause there isn't blood and gore and shoot outs doesn't mean it's " bland". You just have bad taste in film.

I pretty much stopped watching horror flicks in the 90's and I don't care for remakes so I'm glad it isn't doing well. Hopefully Chloe Moretz realizes that she doesn't have to do Every movie put in her way and when she gets a script, all she has to do is Google the premiss and/or name; if it is a remake, just pass on it and do another movie.

I thought Gravity was a spectacular movie in a year filled with mediocre at best performances.

I want to live in the same world as the folks who consider a movie like Gravity to be nothing special whatsoever! :O

Can you take me there? Please?! :D

@TMP: My favorite film maker is my idol, Steven Spielberg. I love Marc Webb because (550) Days of Summer is great and he did an awesome job with, The Amazing Spider-Man.
