The Maze Runner kicked things off late Thursday evening with $1.1M and then followed that up with a $9.9M Friday. That puts 20th Century Fox's film on pace for an opening weekend north of $30M.  Those estimates give it a shot of making back its $34M+ production budget right out of the gate. That's gotta be music to the ears of Fox executives. The film is based on a best-selling young-adult novel and stars Dylan O’Brien from MTV’s Teen Wolf. Audiences seemed to have liked it as they gave it a solid 'A-' CinemaScore.

Also opening this weekend, was Liam Neeson’s A Walk Among the Tombstones. It'll finish in second with a lackluster $14M - falling well short of the recent $19M prediction. On the upside, the film only cost $23M. On the downside, audiences didn't seem to care for the R-rated flick as they only gave it a 'B-' CinemaScore. For comparison, last February Neeson's Hitchcockian thriller Non-Stop opened with $28.8M and in January of 2012 his man vs. nature film The Grey opened with $19.6M.

I figured Maze Runner would do pretty well. You already knew that it was bound to capture the younger audiences attention. The IMAX 3D trailer for it was great as well.

@BatzFTWfan

It technically hasn't beat Iron Man 1's numbers, but will before next week. It HAS, however, passed IM2. IM2 made 623.9M OVERALL (312.4M DOM/311.5 INTL) while GOTG has already made 314 DOM/@312 INTL so far.

@BatzFTWfan That sounds about right. The true test'll be China, though. If it makes a THIRD of what T4 has made there it should be in good shape!

@Loki668 LMAO I was thinkin that

decent number for Maze, but could have done a bit more.

Still, being a September release, not bad. As long as it gets to 100m, I think Fox would be happy, and MAY do a sequel

@BatzFTWfan

How crazy is it that if those numbers hold up to come true (and it's very plausible that they could) GOTG...a TOTALLY UNKNOWN movie property full of D-LIST comic book characters will have made MORE bank out the GATE then both Superman (668 MIL) and Spider-Man (758 MIL) reboots...??

Didn't think "The Maze Runner" would earn that much at the box office. Looks like a SyFy movie to me.

@DoubleD

Well they must have just altered the trailer for 3D purposes. Maybe it was only IMAX I saw Dawn in, but it was still great regardless.

Good to hear it, I know very little about Maze runner but it's a movie I've been interested in seeing during a lacklustre period of releases post GOTG.

Good for Maze Runner.

And Guardians will finish with 325 just by doing the same numbers as IM in the next weeks, and it has been doing better so its a given.

@gambgel They already started pre-production for the Maze Runner sequel The Scorch Trials earlier this month. Like GotG they green lit the sequel a few weeks before the movie premiered.

Maze Runner was really good. Strong script. Good acting. Very suspenseful. I think it was well directed. There was a handful of things changed from the book but all the important points remained and the core of the story stayed true. I also think the movie handled the main character better than the first book did.

On to The Scorch Trials
